Time to resurrect a very old discussion on this forum.....
Anybody remember the old 'Spiralhorn' discussion??
http://www3.ocn.ne.jp/~hanbei/eng-intro.html

I think that looks really neat!
Anyway, what brought this back up is that I found some spiral-shafted paper towel holders at Wallie World. They only had 2, so I snatched them up in thinking of doing a smaller 3-4" driver with a 1.5" port or thereabouts. The shafts are semi-rubbery plastic on a metal thread shaft, and can be easily sealed against a surrounding wall I believe.
Anyway- It's always something I've wondered about, and this makes it easy.
I can't find the holders on walmart dot com, so I will look up the ISBN later...
Thanks for looking...

hey, if it keeps you off the streets and out of trouble, im for it.
look foward to seeing what you come up with.

I stumbled across that guy's web page at one point. Its all very interesting, tho I don't know enough to tell whether they actually do anything or just function as long ports. Either way if you're going to take a stab at it I'm interested in the results.

Long ports.
I always like how people think they're the next to find a "new" speaker alignment, instead of just acknowledging it's a novel implementation of an existing design .. in this case, the 'vent' is also going to act like the box, sort of like a TL
I am trolling you.

I would think a slower spiral (thinking 180 degree turn)inserted in a port would increase the ports potential by slowing air velocity and reducing midrange coloration.

It's also not a direct path in a straight line, so you could probably place it behind a woofer. I agree with your sentiment about slowing it down.
Whether it eliminates issues or not, or causes others, is what I want to find out. I'm not really doing it for the 'esoteric' part of the design, but that I want to know what it really does. Mind you my x-section won't be very large.
Still, it's something interesting to try...

If it does slow air velocity and still lets a majority of the sound through it should have better power handling. Are you going to test ported and ported with spiral? It would be interesting to see if there are any differences when measured.

"Slowing things down" would only serve to increase group delay and parasitic interactions with the loaded air mass.
I am trolling you.

Sounds kind of similar to the "stuff a port full of drinking straws" idea.
