Thread: Yamaha Horns?

  1. #1

    Default Yamaha Horns?

    Hey Gang,
I picked up a pair of Yamaha SM12H monitors (these came from a church), The have a 12" sub, and a big old horn.. I hooked them up, they sound ok, but could use alot of help. I was thinking I should scrap the monitors and use the drivers for something else? But I don't know if this is a good option or not... The horns are
    JAY2060 16ohm

    the 12" are JAY5060 8ohm

Let me know what you guys think.. I tried finding specs for the drivers, but did come up with much, besides, I wouldn't know what to do with the specs anyway! lol

Those 12's are not "subs".. get that out of your head right now, these are bass/guitar PA speakers that only have a usable lowend response down to about 80hz, so there really is no improving them on that end of the spectrum. You certainly may be able to further flatten the overall response of the speaker system with some crossover mods, but stop "improving" when it begins to reduce the output sensitivity.

    Thanks Paul,
I was thinking I might be able to make good use of the horns, perhaps use them for an Econowave design? I will just sell both 12"

You're a bit off base. The important part of the econowave design is using a waveguide horn that has smooth response (and one they have designed a crossover for), something the yamaha horn surely isnt.

Your thinking is a bit backwards. The speakers work, but they don't sound great, so you want to throw away the cabinets and use the drivers?? That's quite backwards. If you upgraded the drivers, adjusted the tuning and made a worthy crossover they would sound better. Sure the cabinet construction is rubbish but not the sole reason they sound bad.

I think you should leave them as is if they work. Make use of them as floor monitors or sell them on craigslist. You're not really going to make much of an improvement using the drivers out of them for something else.

Built to a (low) price point, they're actually a pretty well "balanced" speaker . . . every component (including the box) is equally poor . . .

Thanks for the input, I will just off these and move on to something else.
