Default Pro Ac Future .5 clone

So I recently inhereted a pair of clones of the $6k/pr Pro Ac future 0.5. They have pretty amazing drivers, and for the $200 I paid for them, it pretty much covers one of the woofers. So if nothing else I picked up almost $800 worth of drivers for $200.

I would like to work with them though. There is something there. Perhaps a tweak to the x-over? The problem is I have no schmatic at all. I really would like to start with simple changes, so obtaining the crossover schmatic is critical. I could trace back the entire crossover, but it would be quite a pain. Any ideas?

Those are pretty decent speakers, did the cabinet builder do a good job? If so, you could possibly turn and burn them on Audiogon.

Otherwise, other than measuring the individual driver responses with and without the crossover I don't know how to get any other idea of what is going on internally.

Yeah, the cabinets are in great shape. The only issue is they are a 6/10 max on the finishing. Black rolled on paint. Texture like bed-liner. He also used the "wet look" stuff on the woofers. Did a nice job on cionctruction All 1" MDF. I will have pictured up of them eventually.

I want to keep them I played with just eq-ing them a bit. They have major issues in the lower midrange area. I have heard orignals that exhibit the same behavior. BUT EQ-ed they start to be quite an amazing design. I would love to fix the issue in the mids, and have a heck of a speaker!

Can they be sanded down and refinished?

How sure are you that the original crossover has been faithfully reproduced?

Sounds like a nice project for the winter months - I don't know if you have access to a heated workshop or not.

The crossover is accurate, They guy that did them borrowed a pair from am HIFI shop and reverse engineered the x-over.

I think I just need to crack-em' open. It is a nice winter project... My workshop is not heated.

Is everything glued together and difficult to access?

If not I would disconnect the drivers make sure they are working to measure their response with and without the crossover connected, should tell you what you need to know about the drivers and the filter.

Did the builder properly seal the midrange---just press on the woofer to see

Proac has always been iffy to me with their sound I never caught on with their thin upper mid and just "unrefined" sound. Using shallow filters with drivers that weren't always suited for it contriuted to this especially in the Response series of some time ago.

I can't find any measurements of the system itself. So I don't know what the target response should be. Did the builder have any measurments?

Maybe remove the passive crossover and go active. Probably end up improving the speaker 2 fold from its passive performance. Those drivers in an active system would be a long term speaker solution for even the pickiest person.

Wait for a deal on an amplifier and a crossover, use it as it is for now.
Yeah I built a couple speakers....
