Boxes for In Ceiling Speakers?

I picked these up on amazon for $120 last night.
I am building an office in the lower level of a house for a customer. I plan on mounting these in the floor joists/ ceiling of the office. Both will be in the same cavity 14.5"w x 9.5"d x 16' long. I am putting R13,/ 3.5" thick rolled fiberglass in the ceiling.
My question is would it be better to frame in each speaker with a box with rigid fiberglass or use the whole space. The living room is above so I am also concerned about sound transferring above. I'll be starting drywall on Tuesday so I need to move fast if I need to build a box.

Personally I wouldn't bother framing a box...
However; It is for a customer: Is sound control as issue for them...
Since these are small drivers in an office my thinking was that operating volume would be low.
The amount of transfer could probably be tested approximately. The R13 will cut transfer significantly

I'd break them in a bit, run them on WT3, throw the T/S parameters into a box sim and see how they'll sound at various box volumes below IB-range. If they're crap in anything but a small box, you may want to frame on this basis alone.

I got a pair of the Vifa/Audax coax speakers PE for my car and they were available in 2 version, low and high Qts. You probably already know what I found. The high Qts were a better fit in my car doors. You already have the drivers, so it's a matter of application.

Sound control is a whole 'nother story....

Just thought I would follow up. I broke them in and hooked them up to the WT3. Looks like they like a vented box best. Win ISD is using the ceiling spacing with two speakers in it.

Measured these with the mic sitting off to the side about 10' away with the speakers sitting on my work bench leaning against my damping panels. Just to see what the way off axis was. Kind of how you would be sitting in the room away from the speakers. Surprisingly not bad.

Boxing them out will help significantly. Having done several pairs of in-ceilings and in-walls, I find that it tightens up the bass response (whether it's the optimal volume or not) and cuts down on buzzing/rattling. A quick 1/2" MDF 5-sided affair will help out...if you are feeling froggy, put a baffle on it as well. An even quicker way of doing it is to use the floor above as the back, the joists as two of the sides and drop in a baffle and the other two sides.


It's worth it....do it!!!!!

Where were you last week! ;) Drywall is up, taped with one coat of finish. No holes cut yet. Two layers of R13 in the joist space. I do still have the end open outside the room so I could slide something into the space I think.
Messing with Win ISD I could put one 4" vent 2 inches long between the two and that would flatten the peak. I don't see these being used at high volumes. More for Christian music.

I would box them in if not for better sound then atleast to help control sound transfer.

When I was in college, I played this guy's cd so much I was afraid I'd ruin it! It still plays, and I still thoroughly enjoy it! It probably has the most played hours of any disc I own.

In fact- I got to see him live in '99. I was 2 right from the center pole right in front of the pit. I had long hair then, so that is indeed my mop!!

If I needed motivation to tear apart my car and replace the monsoon speakers this would do it. No way I can listen to music like this at volumes I enjoy in the house, my wife would kill me and I think my little CV's would end up doing a Cheech and Chong: Up in Smoke.
