    Default Best Glue/Adhesive for Cabinets/Enclosures?

    All~

As I am a Newb~ at all of this I though it wise to solicit your advice.

What is the best Glue or Adhesive to use when making the Cabinets/Enclosures for Speakers?

I am not sure if it matters but you can assume that I will be using 1.0-inch thick Med-Density Fiberboard (MDF) for my projects. [because I actually will ]

    Thank you all.

Any good wood glue will work fine.
    I personally use Titebond.

Yep. There is no need to get fancy. Titebond in a decent joint is stronger than the MDF. Glue up a test joint and break it. It should fail in the MDF near the joint, not in the glue. -- Doug

I've used Elmer's/Gorilla polyurethane glue, Elmer's school-glue, Elmer's wood glue, and all 3 work well.

There's a reason why Elmers and Tite-Bond, among others offer 3 main types of PVA glue.
The ordinary white has the least resistance to glue line creep but offers a long open time, good for the less-than-adept builder. (Don't even open the glue bottle before you do a dry run through with all your cauls and clamps)

Yellow Type 2 is no stronger than the white but has more moisture resistance; the downside is a very short 5 minute open time. Good for sign-makers, bad for carpenters.

Tite Bond 3 offers better resistance to glue-line creep, good moisture resistance and a longer 10 minute open time. The extra $$$ for hobby builders is a non-issue unless you order it in the convenient 55 gallon drum size.

Moving to Urethane glue, Gorilla is garbage! PL-200 and it's construction adhesive brethren are kick-*** great especially for complex glue-ups like those cute Japanese front-loaded horns where no clamp dares to go.

If all I had was white Elmers Carpenters Glue I could happily build anything you want.

Regardless which PVA you choose, for MDF, Particle Board or Plywood, dilute it 50/50 with water and spread it on the joint prior (allow it to dry) to glue-up.

Not necessary or recommended. Weakens the joint. Both sides of the joint should have glue applied, but dilution or drying is not needed for the Titebonds or similar. Polyurethanes do generally need the surface wetted prior to application.

If your parts cutting and joinery are perfect you can use just about anything already mentioned. If not there's nothing else that matches this:

Depends on the application, either Titebond II or III.

I'll second that. How are your wood working skills and the tools you have at your disposal. If you're decent with your hands and have a table saw and are capable of making accurate, straight cuts that fit properly, Titebond II or III would be great choice. If your skills aren't all that, or you'll be using a circular saw without a fence guide or a jig saw for your cuts, you'll want a polyurethane construction adhesive, like the PL Premium Mr. Bill suggested, it's excellent stuff.

    Strongly disagree.

Apply wood glue full strength to both surfaces, then clamp.

Sealing the surface with a diluted mixture, allowing it to dry, then adding more glue and clamping seems like a terrible idea... your actual clamped glue would be adhering to hardened glue, not the material itself. Can't imagine why you would do this.

    Titebond III for everything.

Although I can't actually claim better results than Titebond I or II (I haven't done testing), I figure spend a buck or two more and get the good stuff.

Relative to the other costs, a $9 bottle of Titebond III is not a big deal.

Titebond III gives you longer working time. Joint strength about the same as II.

PL 400 Poly is the strongest glue I ever used and don't let it dry on your skin you will be picking it off for weeks.Ask me how I know. There is no wood in the world stronger than a glue joint made with PL400 Polyurethane.

Unless you are building giant Altec 210 cabs Titebond II is good enough for small to medium sized enclosures though.

    WOW~

That is a lot of responses.
Sounds like the general consensus is Tite-bond II or III would probably be appropriate.
Since the current project is relatively small I will try out one of those based on what I can get from the Local LOWE'S.

Thank you all for your input.
Of-course you can expect me to ask more questions of the "basic" level nature.

    Agreed.

Far more important than the adhesive you choose is the accuracy of the mating parts.

Having a good bracing structure in your cabinets will help a lot too. Not only does it reduce cabinet resonance, but it also greatly spreads out the load.
