Anyone know anything about Grundig speakers???
I found a pair of these Grundig 5A speakers at a thrift store a while back and couldn't resist. I've had them setting on a bench and decided to get them out and take a look at them. I've attached some pics so you can see the outside of them. I pulled the stuffing out of them and they have a transformer with some caps attached to it. It's all factory, not a DIY project.
I haven't put them on my WT-3 yet, so I can't give any insight in that regard. I did hook them up to play them and they were pretty boring.
Does anyone have any info about these speakers they'd be willing to share?
Thanks,
Mike

Well, I do know that Grundig is a pretty well respected German manufacturer, and I seem to remember that they were the house brand for Porsche back in the day, but I could be wrong about that...
Other than that, no insights, sorry.

Re: Anyone know anything about Grundig speakers???
My dad told me he pulled apart a grundig console once and made some speaker boxes for his room, and his mom got mad at him lol.
And he wonders...
Looks like you could do a new box and crossover for them, they'd sound alright, maybe for the garage.
I always want to buy old speakers and fix em up like that, but I don't have any way to measure anyhting yet, all in good time though.

Re: Anyone know anything about Grundig speakers???
I had a large portable Grundig radio back in the 60"s. Kind of like the forerunner of the boom box or ghetto blaster. It was only mono but it had a great sound .It had a 5"x7" speaker with a whizzer cone in it and two electrostatic tweeters that could be turned off or on independently with a switch , kind of like a high filter. It also had am, fm short wave ,and long wave. (My mother was a hair dresser and asked me if it came with permanent wave.)My father also had a Grundig counter top radio with all the radio waves in it. I have that stored in the basement .Its a tube set and has the same speaker set up in it except the woofer is a little larger and that will almost keep up with the Bose table radios. But it is also mono .Great bass. I always wanted to take the speakers out of it and put them in a box to see what it would sound like but I wouldn't have two for stereo. They seemed to make good sounding speakers in their day. Do something with them I would be interested in what you think they sound like. The Grundigs made good stuff but they were a b_tch to work on.

Re: Anyone know anything about Grundig speakers???
I grew up with one of the big Grundig world band radios in the family too. It used a giant 9v (I believe) battery that became impossible to find sometime during the early 1980's.
As far as speakers go and as a kid, I remember a bunch of my relatives over in Germany had stereo pairs of round Grundig speakers. It's interesting that they've updated and reintroduced them: http://www.grundig.de/index.php?id=1092&L=1#

Don't know if Grundig did or not, but Wharfdale was known for that.

Mike,
You may be able to find something here.
http://wegavision.pytalhost.com/grundig.html
The manuals are in Deutsch but you should be able to read the specs anyway. It will help if there is a manufactured year on them somewhere. If not I'd start at the mid-70's and move up from there. Also post them up on AudioKarma's speaker section. I'm sure you'll get all the info you want and more. BTW I'm diggin the button on grills!
