WinIsd beta
How do you use the beta version of this program? I've been playing with it and it does not work properly. My laptop has Windows Vista installed in it so i set beta to run in compatability mode with Windows 98 like i have my Alpha version setup and that works fine. any one with a clue as to what i'm doing wrong? The parameters i'm entering are Vas, Qts, and Fs. Any help would be great thanks.

It always worked OK for me in 98 mode. But IMO Beta isn't worth using anyway, stick with Alpha Pro.

They have a new version, It plays nice with windows 7. I think its called Winisd alpha .70

If you have Qts, Vas, Fs, Re and a ruler you sure do have enough Re can be measured quite simply with a multi-meter, and the ruler is to measure the effective radiating area of the cone. Measure from the midpoint of the surround straight across the cone to the midpoint of the surround on the other side, enter that in the Diameter box.
Enter Re, Vas and Fs.
Estimate Xmax, Xmax is (IMHO) not a very important parameter due to the wide variety of ways it is measured so estimates are probably as reliable as manufacturer provided numbers. Push down on the center of the cone until it almost stops. Close enough.
You will now be able to model in WinISD.

Another thing to possibly consider is downloading ARTA and learning how to use the LIMP package to measure impedance. It takes a resistor, and some patience. It is free, too, just can't save project files.

I've been a beta user for over 10 years.
Currently it's running under the cheapest version of Vista, on a cheap (2 yr old?) Compaq with no problems. Didn't bother with any compatibility settings.
What are your issues?
(BTW, the Alpha Pro version runs OK, but does NOT close gracefully.)

I got it figured out now.
On the pro version i had to set the compatability mode to windows 98 to get it to work properly and get it to close.

Yeah, I've heard that.
When I have to close it, I just use Task Manager.
There is a (brand) new WinISD out there, but I've tried it and prefer the offerings that Pro alpha has.

Quick question: Why when modeling and you go to the screen that gives port size does it have a little box beside the length that has Qes/Pe! in red letters? What does that mean also what is a good velocity to stay under to control "chuffing"? Thanks for the replys.

WinISD only needs Fs, Vas, and Qts to model a driver's response in a box. To calc air velocity in a vent, it also needs Qes and Qms, AND Pe, which is the RMS power rating of the driver. It calcs velocity at that power level, which SHOULD be the worst condition.
The mach speed turns red at 0.16, and greeen at 0.15. Green is good, red is bad. This may or may not relate well to the real world (the good/bad indicator). Flared vents, or those with an exit roundover, can handle higher velocities with lower noise. I believe that a lot of designers think that mach 0.15 is a bit excessive, and might prefer something more like 0.10. When you're trying to tune a small box to low freqs, you'll end up having to decide whether to use an undersived port (which will be shorter and will fit in your box), or a larger diameter vent that will be so long you'll have to bend it around with elbows.

Another quickie: What does the Ql=7.00 mean in the Box window and what number do you want to have? It tells me not to change it unless i know what to do (which i don't). Thanks again.

It models how "lossy" your box is. The default of 7 is average. You should not change it unless you know what to do, which you don't.

What led you to think that? LOL! So in lamens terms leave it alone and just keep playing with different box sizes, tunings and ports untill i get it right?
As of now all of my MS speeds are too high below the tuning point, should i worry about that at all? otherwise above the tuning point the MS speed is 14 and below. Thanks for the help it's much appreiciated.
