New Use For Hurricane Nuts...(Pix)
I just finished a pair of small Wedgies surrounds for my sister. She wanted them to be very small and fit flat against the wall. One of the issues was the binding posts/cups. (Not much room in the box or really small "cups" in my stash).
I took a pair of 8-32 Hurricane nuts and filed the flats down to bare metal. I was able to solder wires directly to the flats. I mounted the nuts from the inside. Used an 8-32 Flat head machine screw, with two washers for attaching the speaker wires. I only needed 1/4" of recessed clearance. A bit of clear nail polish to keep the rust away.
Cheap, easy. Offensive to audiophiles everywhere.
Here they are -- before adding grill cloth:

I hope there are no streaks in your polish.

I'd love to see pics.

Well at least they're good for something.

Lunch, I dab a bit of construction adhesive on the flange before I set them. Never had a problem since I did that.

C'mon Lou, package those bad boys up and sell em for $179.95/pair! I mean, don't you now have a wider soundstange with more transparent, textured highs? (Of course the listed price does not include the rest of the speaker - JUST the super space-saving terminals.)

Yeah, I did the same with wood glue and very carefully drilled holes.
Had one spin on me.
Maybe the construction adhesive would work better, but I still would see them as being on the hairy edge of failure.
Done with them.

Re: New Use For Hurricane Nuts...
I love it! Low-budget quick-fix.
Of course, tell your wife that they will sound better once the wiring "breaks in".

Re: New Use For Hurricane Nuts...
They are going to a small duplex in SoCal. Mostly for kid DVD's and her half deaf husband. (15 years of body surfing & professional water polo. Dude must have the thickest eardrums on the planet!) Ain't no audiophiles there!
Actually, they sound just fine. I know Xavier is cringing in his sleep though.

Re: New Use For Hurricane Nuts...
Clever, Lou! How will these be mounted on the wall to get them flush? How are the wires feeding them hidden, fished thru the wall with no plate?
-
Re: New Use For Hurricane Nuts...
Look at the back of the box. 1/4" bb with a 45 degree bevel. There's a matching strip with a 45. Mount the wall strip, then the 45's match up and they sit flush. BITD, it's how old school carpenters hung cabinets
Wiring is their problem!

Isn't that called a French cleat?

I believe you are correct. Never heard it called that.

Do we really have to give the French credit for that?

How often will she need to take them to the manicuriist? Neccesity is the mother of all kinds of crazy ideas.

Re: New Use For Hurricane Nuts...
They're fine for their intended use. Since people obsess about hook-up wire, gold plated terminals, silver solder and $50 caps, I had to poke a little fun.
Actually, these are light enough to use BlueTack for mounting.
C'mon lay off the French. They gave us cynical philosophers, permission to smoke cigarettes everywhere, the Maginot line, some fine cuisine/wine, guidance on graceful surrender, a socialist system where nobody works very hard, and the worst possible place for EuroDisney. Besides everything sounds either arrogant or pornographic when spoken in French... .

Old School? What's the new school method? (I still use French cleats. I haven't done a kitchen in years, but shop and garage cabs all done this way in past few years. Moreover, I use it for all my various 'hangers' for clamps, wood, etc. in the shop.)
