Several years ago, I saw a fairly detailed list of frequency ranges and a short description of the characteristic "sound" of a rise or dip in each range. The ranges described were about an octave wide, maybe less.
I remember the descriptions as very concise and accurate but I can't find the list. Anyone have a link?

I believe your are referring to the table of subjective colorization terms for rises in frequency response bands given by Martin Colloms in his book "High Performance Loudspeakers". The table is one of the most valuable references for identifying frequency bands by ear that need tuning, a vital part of the crossover development process.
