Electronic Crossover For Home Use
Can anyone recommend an electronic crossover for home use?
Has anyone used the FMOD Crossover Pair 70 Hz Low Pass for home use?
Looking to possibly build separate bass enclosures for bookshelf speakers and amp each separately.
Thanks

First, I have not used the Fmods before, but I have read multiple times that the crossover slope was not effective enough to work properly. Check the forum classifieds for a Reckhorn (I think I saw one recently) or a Behringer active crossover.

miniDSP.

Small, simple, effective, easy to use and (relatively) inexpensive.

Yes, in several different configurations. Very shallow learning curve, sounds as good as the DCX2496 or any analog crossover I've built. The flexibility of adjustment and availibility of delay makes crossover design and adjustment simple and painless, much easier than changing parts on an analog board. I'm probably going to sell my DCX/DEQ combination (what I used to use for design/testing) since I hardly use it any more . . .

Anyone else using an active electronic crossover in their home system?

Re: Electronic Crossover For Home Use
I would be happier if "Behringer" offered for a little more money - a model that used better mechanical parts ( ie pushbutton switches on the front panels ).
After approx 18 months of use: the switches became intermittent.
The fix is to clean and lube them as a regular maintenance.
The other issue is the nasty turn/on turn/off transient:
I resolve this with the traditional sequence - Amps are last powered on & First powered off.
Hookup:
Stereo 2 way w summed mono sub.
Sources into my passive preamp -> Crossover -> Amps.
Sub out is summed mono to amp. Mains are are powered by 2 amps.

Re: Electronic Crossover For Home Use
Have used both DBX XL234 and BBE Max-X3 for home audio. Both are excellent units. Prefer the DBX overall for lowest added noise, and there is a 2-way available as well, with either XLR or 1/4" ins/outs which would probably be a better match for consumer level equipment.

Build quality is pretty iffy on that. I have owned two, one failed.
How about a DBX 223? If you get this version (not the "XL" version) it has TRS connectors and you can get very inexpensive adapters to RCAs that just plug right in. I use one in a 4-way active system to cross over to my subs. It seems to be (and feels) well built. Looks nice too!

T
Same problem I'm having with mine. Are the switches easy to get to to clean?

I clean mine from the outside: Depressing switch and spraying into gap between button and front face.

Oh, that sounds easy enough...

Re: Electronic Crossover For Home Use
I ran the DCX 2496 for about 5 years. I first used it in a two-way MTM setup, I then changed to a three-way setup. The features are amazing BUT the noise level can be pretty high. I would have to pull the ribbon cables and clean then every few months.
I finally put together a passive crossover for the three-ways, I was surprised that the system sounded much better.
Make sure you purchase one that is better manufactured if you are to go that route.
