Thread: Dotd - Emm-6

Default DOTD - Emm-6, How do I use it?

Anyone familiar with how to use this mic to do measurements? I never bothered to get measurements, but it's pretty cheap on sale. I need a PC interface to plug this mic in correct? What software do I use to record and how do I use the calibration file?

You'll need a mic preamp with phantom power. A number of sound cards are available with appropriate XLR mic inputs and phantom power (M-Audio, Tascam, etc.). You can also use a mixer like the Behringer Xenyx series to feed a line input into your sound card.

Herb at Cross Spectrum labs does custom cals and has measured a large number of the EMM-6 mics. While he provides many more correction points, he says the downloaded factory cal from P-E should be close enough for most. He also provides calibrates down to 5Hz and will provide cals for 0°/45°/90° mic orientations while the P-E cal is presumed to be on axis 0° and only goes down to 20Hz.

I went with the full Premium+ package from Herb...the biggest difference between his cal and the P-E cal was a more precise location and shape of the 13-15kHz peak that seems common to these 1/4" mic capsules (see the stock Panasonic WM61 datasheet for an example).

So, if I wanted to run one from a laptop, what would I need to order along with the mic (I'm looking for "budget-priced" items, if possible)?
    This amp?
    Amp
Does PE sell one that would work?
Would I need a cable too?
    Thanks,
    Mike

would probably work a bit better than the "tube" preamp. You will need an xlr cable. You plug the output of the preamp into your laptop and/or an amplifier.

    When I started my set-up, I bought a Rolls MP13.

I mention it because I sent it to Herb along with my mic so he could check its freq. response. It measured so flat, over such a broad range, that Herb didn't bother with a cal file.

I am considering more and more the "Blue Icicle" solution of which Mr. Fitzmaurice is an avid proponent. I have the Dayton mic, the 502 Behringer mixer, a soundcard and an amplifier. Setup is a drag for a few minutes of measuring.

^ for ease of use, that's the best route to go. Plug it in, plug your mic in to it, record. Couldn't be simpler.

Anyone take distortion vs frequency and level measurements on the suggested preamps? Wondering whether they can be used for harmonic distortion as well as FR sweeps?
