Default Fostex 6.5, on sale at Madisound, hi $$$

    https://www.madisound.com/store/prod...oducts_id=8642

This looks like a new standard for weird surrounds, not to mention the cone is weird too. The comments mention "less eigentone". Yeah, my wife has been complaining about that lately... I Googled that and it does not look too meaningful in the context of a speaker driver.

    Boy, ya gotta love Engrish...

Still, maybe we should buy a few to help with the Japanese economy...

If you think those items are weird, check out the spider!!

UDR surrounds have been around for a while now. Pioneer used them in the 90's. They are supposed to have equal mechanical resistance to the front and rearward motions in a driver. Conversely, a half-roll won't be 'equally biased'.

The cone always reminds me of the pit-monster 'Sarlac' in Star Wars, and I would call the project that if I used it.

This is THE Fostex that has always intrigued me as far as woofers go. Paired with the intriguing 33mm(?) tweeter and you'd have the set I'd like to try.
Too bad it's still over $100/ea....

I really don't understand the theory behind the surround. All those returns and convolutions are resistant to the axis of motion that the cone is moving in, and will, by definition, results in unequal stiffness of the surround around the circumference.

Maybe it doesn't cause significant issues, but what are the benefits?

Just for aesthetics? If so, then FAIL.

That design pretty much sets the standard for whatever the opposite is of the "form follows function" engineering principle. I'd guess the marketing guys had a lot to do with the design.
