Thread: break in????

  1. #1

    Default break in????

I've got brand new ND105's and some Vifa tweets I'd like to properly break in

I'm gonna run some full range pink noise (IASCA RTA track) through them at moderate volume levels (not above regular listening) for a couple hours. They aren't mounted right now, just wired through some passive crossovers and sitting on pillows in my Living room

    Will that do it?

    What do you guys do?

    Cheers

IMO its really not all that important. I would just start playing music on them. That's what I did. They will start to come together after about an hour or two, maybe even half an hour.

Break in is more important if you're trying to design a system w/ "most" accurate TS params.

You could take the advice of the folks that created Woofer Tester 2.
Here's the advice they give in their forum:
    "Break-In
    --------
    1) Connect the mini-jack line output to your amplifier/receiver

    2) Set the output as a sine wave with F slightly less than the drivers Fs

    3) Adjust the *mechanical* volume to get a decent and safe excursion. Don't rely on the software to control this amplitude. A mistake could be costly!

    4) Periodically *disconnect* the driver and recheck Fs. NOTE: Never connect the impedance test terminals the amplifier outputs!

    5) When Fs seems to be settling to a new frequency, set the driver aside for several hours. What you are doing is waiting for the suspension to re-tighten and settle into its new nominal at rest state. If you are into measuring, you can plot this with respect to time."

Depending on who you believe, you'll need a more than a couple of hours.

+1. If the Fs reads to spec out of the box OK, but that would be the rare exception. I break mine in overnight, using a 25-30 Hz tone with the woofer un-mounted there's no appreciable sound.
