    Default couple of CC questions

Hello all. about a year ago i build my first speaker, a center channel. That was before i even knew about the forum, or cared about the design process. (i was 14, 15 now lol) Consisted of 2 jamo mids, i'm not sure about what ones, buyouts that didn't stay in stock. 2 of the 2in tymphony full ranges, and a vifa tweet. Now that being said....

When i wired it, only the tweeter is crossed, (at 5k) so i wired the pairs in parallel, then the 2 pairs in parallel. Impeadence must have been something horrible, then on top of that, parallel between the xover and that big wire. So today i opened it up, wired the 2 pairs in series (16 ohm per pair) then parallel to get 8ohm. parallel with the crossover to get 4ohm. Confusing much?(this does have a point)

Now the soundstage is more blended, but it is also more spread out because the center is not as loud. How does overall impeadence affect how a speaker sounds/blends. Also how does parallel vs series effect sound quality. Sorry for having a strange way of getting to the point of the questions, but i thought maybe some background would help to explain why i want the answers.

Oh one last thing, when i was screwing in one of the mids, the cone folded over itself, and now it seems a little heavy on the side that folded, how would that change anything? Thanks for reading and answering a few questions.

Can you post a picture of the mid and a schematic of how you had / now have the speakers wired? That would help a great deal.

Basically, your first run gave your amp a 2 ohm load (at least below 5kHz), and NOW it's 8 ohms. Given the same voltage (level), you've lost -6dB on your CC compared to your mains. Can't you bump this back up with your AVR controls?

Playing is fun, but maybe it's time to either learn PCD or build someone else's design? Also, reading "Speakerbuilding 201" will be good for you.

Thanks Chris, and i've done alot more research and have been working on designing a set of towers for almost 6 months, (double check, change something, somthing sells out, ect...) but now i just need a crossover and the money to do it, only about $40 short which sucks.

Do you favor the spreadsheets over programs, winisd-bassbox-ect?

For box modeling I use WinISD Pro (alpha). The biggest gripe seems to be about people having trouble entering data. The first 3 parms you enter are Qes, Qms, and Qts, BUT if you try entering all 3, it'll probably be unhappy (this is mostly due to rounding/reporting errors). Just skip Qts with "autocalculate" on, and everything's fine.

For XO work, I use "XOverSim.exe" only because it's a PC standalone program (I don't have Excel). It DOES use F/Z data files and works well with phase from in cabinet measurements (NOT minimum phase). I KNOW I really should start using the much more powerful suite of Jeff B's software though.

I use Winisd about that same, people seem to believe that it's only good for freqs under 300hz, but i don't want to start that argument again. And thanks for the Xo program, i hav't been able to find one yet that i could use, like you said, no excel.

    Thanks again Chris
