Thread: stained MDF

  1. #1

    Default stained MDF

Hello all. I know it's not a very common process. But i'm looking into staining my new cabs, because of cost that is. I come up with things like this

When i look around. Looks like you have to seal the MDF, then stain with a brush to give a grain effect. Anyone tried this?

That actually looks pretty decent for being that simple.

You should try mixing the stain with the 50/50 water/glue mix that way you seal it at the same time.

you could even put a clear over it to make it look fancy

What do the edges look like, where two pieces of wood meet? That's what I'd be worried about.

I did't think that you could mix it all together. This is't my project, just something that i found online. They used the 50/50 Then stain with a rag, and top coat with the brush.

It worries me a bit too, i'm putting a grill on it and It's not a critical display piece. Just going into my room. So if it looks nice from a few feet away then it's good

If Elmer's white glue is water-based, I don't see why not, you could whip up a small test piece with some routing done on it to see what the roundover, chamfer or w/e will react.

Give a wood graining tool a try. I have seen amazing results with them.

it's been done before in the wonderful world of inexpensive commercial furniture making. MDF can also be textured, clear coated, shaded and so on.
One thing to worry about is the adhesion. A bit of sanding prior to staining and clear coat will help with that.
