    Default Questions About Sunflower Redux

I have been wanting to build the Sunflowers for awhile and would like to hear about any builds in progress or completed. Eye candy would be great as well.

While I have no doubt the Sunflowers sound fabulous, I'd also like to hear listening impressions from anyone fortunate enough to have heard or built a pair.

On a more mundane note, Mr. Carmody's website does not specify whether the Sunflowers use the 4 or 8 ohm RS225. My guess is 4 ohm, but would like to confirm before ordering drivers.

    Thanks, Ed

He used an 8-ohm RS driver. Scroll down this thread for the BOM http://www.htguide.com/forum/showthread.php4?t=38301 I couldn't find the BOM on Paul's website.

I am just finishing up a couple of builds and have been thinking of building the Sunflower Redux. Actually, I've been thinking about building them for awhile.

A quick review of builds on the internet has me thinking I might try my hand at some self designed cabinets. If I'm going to try something different I thought I'd incorporate features from some of my other interests, Arts & Crafts furniture and boat building, while retaining what I perceive as essential design elements.

My reasons for posting are; I intend to try to have the discipline to document this build, want feedback on design elements and which design to go with. It could be that I'd be better served building DanN's design, in which case I'll have saved a lot of time and energy hearing it here before making sawdust. Anyway....

The first drawing is based upon a design, on Paul Carmody's website, by a gentleman called "DanN." My derivation has tapered vertical lines, reveals less of the bass bin and has a flat baffle top. The influences are Mission or Arts & Crafts. For this cabinet the bass bin would be MDF and the baffle would be MDO finished both sides above the bass bin. The bass bin and baffle would be a dark gray or satin black. Side panels would be either qtr sawn White Oak or Mahogany. I perceive this design to have the lowest risk for producing junk.

Design 2 is intended to fulfill my desire to build a curved cabinet and is a nod to fantail transoms. This design features a curved bass bin with side rails integrated into the overall shape. Finish would be veneers, possibly Wenge and contrasting baffle (maple, beech or cherry). This one would be more complex and will stretch my design abilities, woodworking skills and veneer experience.
