Default High SPL studio monitor plans?

    Hello everyone,

Who has suggestions on speaker plans or cabinet kit(s) for a custom pair of studio monitors, 2 or 3-way active, single 10" or dual 8" woofers, or . . .

I need a solid, somewhat neutral sounding system suitable for mix-down and tracking.

I do have (4) Behringer B2031a active monitors laying around, I could steal from if its a good path to follow, but I question if that's a smart move . . .

I like the HiVi D6.8 6" Poly Bass/Midrange if they are used in pairs.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,
    William

It might help if we knew what SPL at 1 meter spec you wanted. The rest should take care of itself.

Even with 2 D6.8s in parallel you're only looking at 91dB/2.83v/1m

Although that is kind of efficient for the average speaker design, you're going to definitely loose a few dB's in the crossover design.

You might want to look into the E-Wave design. Search for the "PCD Mettle" thread by Zilch, he was the proponent of the E-Wave design.

There's also the S15 E-wave design by Gainphile on their blog. Uses an active setup with the MiniDSP.

Are you consider the fact that they will be driven by an active xovers and with an internal amp?

As far as real SPLs go, I have never measured the monitors in place now. Of course, we could look at a similar product from a top-drawer studio monitor focused manufacturer, such as JBL, Genelec, KRK and others. I like the sound and SPL of the larger models with dual 8' Mid/Bass or 10" single + Mid + HF less sub woofer but they cost high bucks!

    Thanks,

Well if you want to go active on the cheap, I'd invest in a Blue Icicle, Dayton Measurement Mic, MiniDSP, and some free/cheap measurement software, like ARTA ($25 for the full version), or Holm Impulse, or TrueRTA ($$). The plug the info into PCD and develope an active crossover, plug it into the MiniDSP and finish up with REW for a ruler-flat response from 20Hz to 20kHz and beyond. Doesn't really matter what drivers you use so long as their capable.

I'm sorry, but all of the Behringer's mentioned are already active.
