    Default OT: New Receiver

I was helping a friend with his new house today. He said there was an old receiver in his basement I could have, the Marantz 2252B pictured below (hopefully). I plugged it in his basement outlet and it lit up and seemed funtional. Once I got it home I connected speakers to it, the volume control is twitchy and hopefully just needs to be cleaned. It appears in pretty good shape, aside from somebody carving their drivers liscense number into the top. I think its to nice for the garage, so it will probably sit in a closet somewhere lol. Just thought I'd share

Nice Marantz! I have a soft spot for old silver receivers and love those blue dials. They deserve better than to be banished to the garage....unless you have a really nice garage! Check the prices for that model on Ebay. They can go for quite a bit, so you might make enough to buy parts to build a nice class D amp or the like. To clean the pots, you can pick up CAIG Fader Lube at most Guitar Centers. It won't dissolve the the grease in the pots like DeoxIT can.

While I really prefer the reliability and low noise floor of modern amps, there's just no denying: that thing is beautiful.

It was on a shelf in the basement with speaker wire still connected to it, but no speakers. There is a whole stack of classical records next to it. I think it was too heavy for them to move it. I didn't clean it, that picture is how I found it. Oddly enough, I just sent in my broken Denon yesterday and this follows me home.

Tom: thanks for the suggestion, I was gonna buy the Deoxit too.

The looks of older HiFi crushes today's stuff IMO. I wish they'd still make'em look like that!

My Sansui(I want to say 7000) is still running strong and it was purchased in 1969 I believe by my uncle. About every 10 years the pots need deoxit--though the first round was in 1995, it could have used it earlier. My dad had to do it again just a couple years ago. A couple of the tags on the buttons needed to be glued back on as well. Other than that it's good--and powerful. Oh, and HEAVY. Ignoring its beauty is hard to do. All the other electronics in my dad's house just look cheap with that receiver in there. Of course they are cheap, but that's my dad--as long as it works, he's happy.
