Thread: Desktop system

    Default Desktop system

    Hi...
I'm just a newbie asking for an advice.....
I want to set up a couple of amps and speakers to build a desktop system.
    I have this parts:
    2 - Indeed Tripath TA2020 Mini Cute Class T Amplifier 20WX2 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Indeed-Tripa...ht_9469wt_1185
    2 - Adapter 12V5A for Tripath TA2024 TA2020 T amp http://www.ebay.com/itm/AC90-265V-Ad...ht_4971wt_1205
    5.1 - Speakers from a old LG Home Teather (4 LHS-T6540T 8 ohm speakers, 1 LHS-T6540C 8 ohm speaker, 1 LHS-T6540W 4 ohm subwoofer)

What is the best scenario to use this speakers?
    Any recommendations?
What about the connections at the attached image?

    Regards,

    Ruben Garza - Mexico

While those speakers might be fine for surround effects, honestly think you'll find yourself prefering a pair of 2-driver 5.25" bookshelfs for fronts. The bass from those HTIB "subwoofers" can be obnoxious and bloated, too.

So all I would bother to repurpose, would be the four satellites. Don't bother with a center, and pick up or build new mains. A subwoofer is tough to call..

A good 7.1 sound card should at least deal with outputs into the amps, but you'll want an SPL meter to set levels correctly. Again, I can't stress how much i'd look to add just two quality speakers up front.

The Indeed TA2020 can handle a 4ohm load, so you could parallel 2 pairs of the satellites on one amp, and then run the other amp on the passive sub. It's kind of a funky setup and it's probably not going to knock your socks off, but it will work. Forget about integrating the center channel speaker.

I'm assuming the subwoofer is passive and that it has left+right inputs, so either it's a single DVC driver or a pair of drivers in that cabinet. At any rate, it’s already rated at 4-ohms as you stated, so you don’t want to parallel it with any other speakers.

Good luck. The Indeed amp has a very nice clean sound. IMO, it's worthy of better speakers.

Just another hint. Go easy on the volume. Your speakers probably won't handle the full output of your amps.

Just a question here... Aren't four speakers a bit much for a desktop system? I run two 3" TangBand full-rangers in 4"X12"X7.5" enclosures and they fill my area very nicely and have excellent imaging. Being nearfield, these little guys put out the right amount of bass too. Depending on what you're trying to accomplish and how big your listening area is, you could get a lot done for a small amount of $$$ and a small footprint.
    Just my two cents.

Mike, my cousin next door has one of the Logitech 7.1 systems on his desktop and behind it and under it and...(biggest waste of money I've ever heard). I'm convinced (from the sales of this stuff and Blows Audio) people today just don't know what good sound is supposed to be anymore. I know Steve's taste is in his mouth (maybe?), but geez.

Well... like I said, this speakers are from a home theater that doesn't work anymore and I would like to use them while I get a better set.

When you say "only 2 inputs" you mean a Left + Right input correct?? So 4 conductors -- 2 positive and 2 negative.

Just making sure, so you don't harm the Indeed Amp.....My guess is it will be very costly to try to ship back to HK for a replacement. You'd be surprised how many people come along here and do not know how to connect a speaker to an amp, but ask for tons of advice on speaker building, etc.

Sorry, I mean 2 quick connect speaker terminals, 1 positive and 1 negative, like this:
