What does professional grade speaker mean?
What does professional grade speaker mean?
I was just looking at the video of “closer look at JBL C608GTI MKII” professional –grade component speaker. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3fePF399vA
The 6.5 –inch woofer does look like a nice toy with a 2-inch voice coil, machined parts and anodized cone. I would not mind having a pair of those to play with. How does this professional grade 6.5-incher different from a highend 6.5-inch woofer or midrange?

Re: What does professional grade speaker mean?
They will probably tell you that it means the components or the finished device has been designed and tested to insure long-term reliability and durability in the face of abuse (continuous operation at high power). Apart from that it's marketing . . .

Would that also mean high spl without sounding harsh or distorted?

What you're looking at, are car audio speakers. So professional grade means that "car audio pros" / competition / setup people would use this level of gear in their car audio demonstrations (can probably take some serious power thermally)
...well.. that or it's just marketing.

For all we know, it sounds harsh at low SPLs!! But yes it means they can probably take some serious power, or at least marketing department says it can. Kind of tough to judge because while I respect Harman/JBL, the large scale car audio market is its own environment and consumers are generally less interested in klippels and testing, and more interested in seeing what happens when you take BIG AMPS and a VOLUME KNOB to the speaker.
The stated crossover point is 3.5khz - which is pretty damn high for a 6.5" woofer IMO, and odd coming from Harman. The reason is probably because these are maximized for high SPLs.

Re: What does professional grade speaker mean?
Marketing aside, car speakers are usually placed closer to the listener than home speakers, so any harshness or distortion would be more noticeable?

That's an independent specification that has nothing to do with "professional" (except with regard to long term power handling . . . ie. not smoking the driver). 115dB at less than 1% distortion is one thing; indoors or outdoors, day and night, continuous for a year, is another.
"Professional" might also be used to imply suitability in a "production" environment, such as standard rack-mount size, or balanced interconnects, or such, and of course some minimum level of "quality", but it more often means (if it means anything) reliability and durability.

Re: What does professional grade speaker mean?
I have heard some pro sound venues that were very satisfying, especially in terms of the impact and dynamic contrast. Of course this could all due to the equalizing and acoustic environment. However, this does not stop me from thinking about duplicating pro sound like experience in the homer using "pro" quality components.

Here is a real pro midrange.

Are there more like this out there?
Recently I acquired a pair of vintage Pioneer HPM 100 and Cerwin Vega LS12. Pioneer HPM 100's sound very good with Kitaro's music. Cerwin Vega LS is a totally different beast and it sounds warm , ease-going but it has a lot of bass. When I watched Midway in a movie theater years ago, Cerwin Vega subwoofers were used to provide the sound effect of airplanes' taking off.
