My nephew's first build
Two to TANGo or BAND-Aids? (because they're ugly and will need lots of Bondo and sandpaper to smooth them out)
Go easy on him with those boxes. He is an electrician, not a wood worker and he only had a circular saw, a hole saw and a drill to build with. He is going to bondo/sand them up to make them look pretty then paint.
Two of these little guys per channel wired parallel. The boxes are .58 cubes at 60 Hz. He put egg crate on the side, top and back walls
I helped model them for him but he did everything else. I pointed him towards resources to read but I did not tell him about measuring and designing a contour circuit. I am by-no-means an expert on it and I want him to experiment and discover on his own. He is going to round over the edges and the port when he gets a chance. Any other pointers to tweak the sound?
I know the video does not do them justice. I have not heard them in person because he lives in New Mexico. The mic on his little Flip camera is pretty decent though. He said they sing beautifully. Much like their brothers, (the black cone PE exclusives) they do voice very well, especially female. He has a pair of the TB 5 1/4" neo subs that he is going to use for the .1 to these 2.

Re: My nephew's first build
Highpass one of them and make it a 1.5way design? Two of them in one box will make for all sorts of interference at high frequencies.

Nice choice of music to test by...
Amy Lee sounded really good also liked the up close recording of the bass port.
I would try a few solo piano pieces to hear if a few notes are muted or ear piercing.. This hobby is for fun and personal enjoyment... Enjoy.

Re: My nephew's first build
He is going to get some of the cheap elctro caps and play around with high passing 1 of the woofers in each box. He is also thinking about dropping some dough on the Dayton Omni mic setup and start some real tweaking. I think he has been bitten by the bug. Little punk lives rent free, makes good money and does not have to deal with WAF. I'm a little jealous. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll let you know how they turn out.

I think what you're really looking for is an inductor. The cap will turn one of the drivers into a tweeter. I don't remember the formula for baffle step where you calculate the width of the baffle with frequency. This tells you where the bass is rolling off (4pi to 2 pi space) where you're losing 3 - 6 db SPL depending how far from the wall the speakers are.. A safe area to start rolling off the bottom driver is 250 hz.

Oh, Dirk said to high pass them. I would use a cap to do that, right?

Re: My nephew's first build
I would love for one of my nephews (or nieces for that matter) to show some interest in this endeavor.

If a capacitor is hooked up in series with a speaker, it will be a high-pass crossover (signals at lower frequencies will be blocked, and higher frequency components of the signal will be allowed to pass). An inductor in series with a speaker will be a low-pass filter. Subwoofers need inductors in series (low-pass), while midranges will need both a high-pass (cut bass off) and a low-pass (cut higher frequencies that tweeters will be taking care of). Tweeters need also high-pass filters, to block lower frequencies.

Re: My nephew's first build
Yeah, Dirk was a bit of an idiot when he said that. LOWpass one of them, so that only one driver acts at high frequencies. Having two drivers putting out bass is a good thing.
