Default Looking for a little help.

    Hi all
I recently bought a RSS315HO-44 from another member here to use in a HT setup.I figured I could wire the DVC's in parallel and use a 240 watt PE plate amp to drive it.
I asked for some help on Home theater shack designing a box and they told me that it was a 2 ohm sub and not at all useable in a HT setup. They didnt seem to think it was DVC.
So needless to say I was disappointed but also confused. Why can't it be used wired in parallel?
Can anyone come up with a useable design for this use or will I just have to sell the sub to someone in the car audio arena?

    Thanks
    Al

p.s. I tried using winisd pro and just confused the hell out of myself.

The Specs for that Sub are right here - Yes, it is a DVC sub with each coil being 4ohms - most plate amps (ie the Dayton PE 240W) will not drive a 2ohm load if you wired the coils in parallel - you could always just use one of the coils for a 4ohm load or wire the coils in series for a 8ohm load either of which would work fine with the Dayton PE 240W amp you have.

They are great subs for HT or music use.

Sorry I was being stupid ... i meant series.... 8 ohm
The spec sheet on the dayton amp says it will output 170 watts into 8 ohms.
    Thats what i meant.

If you used just one coil you would get the most power out of the 240W amp without harming the driver in any way.

Just doing a quick look at a design in WinISD it looks like a 2 ft^3 ported enclosure with that amp and only one coil driven will get you an output level of about 107db with a respectable f3 of about 21hz.

You are looking at a 2 ft^3 enclosure - without any consideration for the volume taken away by internal supports or the port.

For the port you are looking at one 4in dia x 34in long, which is going to be tough to do in a smallish enclosure. Some alternatives to a standard port you might want to think about, is to go with a slot port or a passive radiator

If you run a single coil (on ANY DVC driver), "Qes" basically doubles, and therefore Qts NEARLY doubles. For this particular driver, it jumps from 0.38 up to 0.71, taking it out of the running for a vented box.

You CAN run both coils in series, and you should, THEN the 2 cf box with the 4"d x 34" vent will serve you well. Dropping the SA240's output from 240w down to 170w is only going to amount to -1 to -2dB lost.
