This may be old news, but I thought this interview was interesting:

Neil Young is on a quest to improve upon the MP3 file that dominates digital music. Young isn't opposed to the fact music is going digital, but says the quality of today's files aren't good enough, with quality just five percent of traditional recordings. "My goal is to try to rescue the art form I have been practicing for the past 50 years," Young said, speaking at the D: Dive Into Media conference on Tuesday. January 31, 2012

I didn't watch the video, but I think I recall correctly that in the late 90's he was one who still insisted that his recordings be released on vinyl as well. He was always interested in the best quality sound.

He also was one of the last to go to digital mastering, staying with tape until the decks were tossed. Not that the MP3 is a sonic leap by any means, but it's no worse that Lear 8 Track and Philips cassettes,
