Default What is your favorite movie score?

I am a rocker at heart but I have a soft spot for movie scores. I just saw "In Time" last night and fell in lust for it. It was composed by Craig Armstrong. It is simple but powerful. The movie is not too bad either.

Ahhhhh, movie scores: the last vestige of real music in the modern world.

Overall, ANYTHING composed by Bernard Hermann, Danny Elfman or John Williams. Max Steiner's stuff from the 40's was pretty awesome as is all of Mancini's work from the 50's & 60's.

Thanks for posting this topic. (-:

"Brother Where art thou" soundtrack CD is remarkable on a good system -- even if you're not a fan of old-timey music.

Played a cut for my son's buddies and they couldn't believe how good it sounded.

I'm a huge fan of Danny Elfman. His scores are like no one else's, and are immediately recognizable. Beetlejuice, Batman, Men in Black, etc. etc.

Soundslike gave me a CD of his soundtrack work that I love to listen to. It's just great stuff, IMHO.

Plus, his work with Oingo Boingo was pretty fun, so that's a plus....

Not sure Wagner counts as a movie score composer, but I do love the Flight of the Valkyries....

Don't forget his first soundtrack Mark: "Pee Wee's Big Adventure", which was also quoted often in his "Beetlejuice" score. +1 on the shout out for Oingo Boingo (-:

BTW: All of Danny's soundtrack recordings are available for free streaming on Spotify.

    Take care (:

"North by Northwest" by Bernard Hermann. The first time I watched that movie, I just couldn't stop thinking about how passionate the score was.

Also, not that you asked, but my favorite video game soundtracks are "The Secret of Monkey Island" by Michael Land and "The 7th Guest" by George Sanger. Both are wayyy too catchy, and I still can't get them out of my head 20 years later. (The best game music is the kind that you don't want to mute, and you are still humming along, tapping your feet after 20 hours of gameplay.)

Don't laugh, but the original score for "The Legend of Zelda" (Koji Kondo) on NES does that for me.

We played this before, and I'm still with "Showboat" my all-time favorite musical to watch and perform. I love the music and the book. Number 2 would be "The King and I" with Yul Brenner, NOT the Disney abortion. Number 3 is Dimitri Tomkin's "The Alamo" for John Wayne.

John Williams and Hans Zimmerman are easy favorites but I think two stand out movies for me aside from their work would be Apollo 13 and The Hunt for Red October.
