How come nobody told me?
I made a GREAT deal with Foxfire (thanks man!) on a pair of Peerless 830875 barely used HDS Nomex woofers. I got them today and dropped one on a sealed .6 cu. ft. box and ran some sweeps on it with my DTA-100 and laptop. WOW!!!! those are supposed to be 80 Hz sealed! Hardest, cleanest 80Hz I've ever heard! I plan on these living in about 18 liters ported, with maybe a Tang-Band tweeter($$). They won't go as low as some Dayton's, but who cares? Girls, spend more on your drivers;there IS a difference. I'm not saying you can't build great sounding speakers with bargain drivers....you can. The modded BR-1's are a great example, and there are lots more. These Peerless mid-woofers could spoil me in a hurry though.

My experience also - while the love the $11 Aura NS6, a RS150 for $30 will go a lot deeper, cleaner and louder in a much smaller box.
My large number of posts is not because I'm an expert. Most posts are "I don't understand"

Re: How come nobody told me?
The difference between a Dayton Classic and a Peerless HDS (most of them) is far greater than the difference between a Dayton Reference and a Peerless HDS.

Re: How come nobody told me?
...also, everyone has told you. The thing about this board, though - is a $400 project easily falls under quite a few of the guys budgets, so they have no problem recommending those projects and cannot figure out why a guy wants to "limit" himself to a $100 project.
In fact, a guy can walk on and say "I have $100 to spend, that is my limit" and people will still question his self imposed budget and totally avoid making recommendations within that budget.
So yes, you have been told over and over again to buy better drivers even if you cannot afford them.

I can believe that. I'm still chicken of most aluminum cone drivers though.

Re: How come nobody told me?
also, remember that there are different reasons for buyouts - some buyouts are basically junk, while others are really nice drivers sold at bargain prices because there were overstocks, companies going out of business, and so forth. so while there's generally a correlation between quality and price, it's certainly not 100% true. used quality drivers can be another good example.

Re: How come nobody told me?
The last 18 months have spoiled us on the buyouts.

"Never heard a Peerless Nomex that I didn't like." -Me
That particular driver gives up some bottom end for a nice clean FR curve. I used it in the Veepers
Johnny speaks with straight tongue. For some people $100 is a lot to spend on sound, for others $1000 seems like a bargain. There do seem to be a lot of "... for just a bit more, you can..." type replies on the board. Value systems are pretty individual. I'd NEVER spend $5 for a StarBuck$$$$, but $100 for a new tool is a deal!
The classifieds here are a great way to get into better drivers. Often they require less work on the crossover side so the final cost isn't so painful. And you get to save another hoarder from reality TV!

They are excellent when done right, but they rarely are done right. What metal cones need, and why they need it, flies directly in the face of the "common wisdom" . . . and while "what's right" is easy to sim (and relatively easy to implement) the benefits don't appear in the simulation and are, as a result, generally ignored or dismissed.
As an aside: the DC160 is as good as a woofer as it is bad as a midrange (the word "very" comes to mind). It all depends on how you use it.

Lou, I might come close to copying your Veepers. Now what I want is a "PR-X" using the Peerless 830883...See how quickly I can get spoiled rotten? P=Peerless, R=Raal
