cats ugh
So I had my AR 4x's apart to do a must deserved restoration. My girlfriends cat sat her fat *** on my woofer while the cabinet was on its side . ripped the cone in half !
No fear though I repaired it and painted the baffles, recapped, restored the pots. They sound amazing a true large speaker killer, Bass from these is quite impressive
Pictures to come when I get off work, such beautiful weather here and I am a field manager for a large horse farm so its time to rocken roll !

Re: cats ugh
The fault is yours, my friend, not the cats's. A dog might do something similar, but not necessarily in the same way, as most cats and dogs are inquisitive. And, yes, while I sure do like dogs, I have cats, well just one now, and none of them have ever damaged a driver because I don't create circumstance allowing them to do so.

Re: cats ugh
Hey, I had one of my cats spray (urine) on one of my unfinished speaker cabs once. That was kind of a PITA, but at least it didn't permanently damage anything. The cabs were located near the "cat door" (our cats are indoor/outdoor). We couldn't figure out why they were doing this (one case was displaying serious territorial ******* type behavior and was acting very upset in general) until we finally discovered that a juvenile racoon was coming into the house to feast on the cat food! But it stopped coming around one day, and the problem solved itself.

Re: cats ugh
We used to have a couple or three cats, but have only one now because he's a one-cat house type. The only time our cats were even curious about speakers was when I brought up a new pair from the basement workshop, and that's probably because they smelled "new". Our current cat, however, tended to paw at the drivers when he could see them but since I always make grilles, and take them off when listening, he ignores them.

YMMV, of course!

Re: cats ugh
Yeah, leaving them horizontal where the cats could find them was the big mistake. Granted I'd be tempted to make a cat skin cone to replace the driver none the less.
I've noticed an odd propensity of cats to just want to sit ON something. They'll sit on a hardcover book on the couch when it would be more comfortable to sit on the couch just to sit on something that's on something.
I worry about my 100lb hound dog's tail knocking in the dust caps on my woofers but other than that I've been lucky enough to not sustain any animal or child damage to my speakers... yet.
Obligatory cat sitting in woofer picture.

Oh I know its my fault, just don't know why she wanted to sit on it
She must clearly favor acoustic suspension designs

I think it's like laying on an air-bed, riding on an air-ride suspension, etc.
A soft and cushiony support that is not shaped unlike the fetal position most cats sleep in.

Re: cats ugh
AR,
I feel your pain brother. A few weeks back my cat used a NLA 831735 nomex woofer as a scratching post in my 2.5way towers. She also removed some paint and clearcoat in the process.

Re: cats ugh
Something like this happened?

That's a 15" sub btw.

Yeah just instead of a monster sub she choose my 30+ year old woofer lol
Paper gets real brittle after a while

Re: cats ugh
Leftovers of multiple types of quality beer, cats laying "wherever" and old car audio woofers. Reminds me of home. Except my fairly new and extremely needy rat terrier tends to keep the cats away from most of the people activites now.
Thanks,
Aaron

Re: cats ugh
Cats by nature will lay on anything, especially if it's "not supposed to be there". Take off your shirt and throw it on the floor and it becomes a cat magnet.

Re: cats ugh
Awesome pic of the cat in the subwoofer! I sure love cats, it's too bad when they do something like claw your woofer.

That is because your shirt smells like what? You, of course....a demonstration of their affection for you. Cats are loyal, but show it in different ways than dogs.
Aside from curiosity, another reason why the cat was attracted to the speaker driver is because we put so much focus and attention to it ourselves. Ever do paperwork on a desk and have a cat pop up and lay across it?

Re: cats ugh
Oh, it doesn't even have to be clothing from you or anything to do with you. Anything that's left somewhere that normally is not its location just piques the cat's curiosity too much for them to ignore the item. And, if the item is completely new to them, that is even better. I like wine and have a small rack on the bottom of a tea cart in the dining room. When I need refills, I bring up more from the basement, and each time I do, our cat (and all prior cats), spend a few minutes smelling the new bottles just to check them out.

Re: cats ugh
Yeah cats love woofers and the dust cap. I think thats why there are alot of dust cap sold. I've felt your anger. I had a wind storm blow my shop door open and the cats got in and had a shag fest on my work bench. I think Biggie SMALLS used my 18" sub for a his own work bench, hmmm that little basturd.
But it wasnt nothing I could fix, just couldnt believe that darn wind!!!
BR,
Bart
I love Diy audio, because its just me and my ideas and my shop. I can make and mold my ideas and put them to play, its an amazing thing to be able to do!!
