    Default Best Budget Receiver?

    Hello again,

I'm moving back to America and will be slowly piecing together my home theater. I think I know which receiver I want, but they say it never hurts to ask. I plan on going with a Denon 1712, but if anybody knows anything else that is better for 250 bucks please point me that way. I'm only really looking for 5.1, but the 1712 is only a little more expensive than the 1612 so I figure why not. It gives me flexibility in case I'm ever able to convince my wife that we need two more boxes in the room some day and each channel has a touch more power.

So anything better than the Denon AVR 1712 for $250 or less? Thanks fellas.

I got a Yamaha RX V-667 for about 320 refurd from newegg.com. A bit over your budget, but it has 7.1 analog in and 7.2 pre-outs. though i have no idea what i will od with that - it's not like the reciver is running out of power anytime soon that i need to hook up 1kw monoblocks for each channel

    But it is there....

My brother & I both have the Onkyo 608. A little overkill for me, but it takes my brother's Statements HT to a new level.

the 1712 is a nice receiver. If you can find a left over 1611 its last yaers model of this years 1712, it might save you a few bucks they are both 7.1 the 1611 has a little less power though at 75 RMS.

I got a brand new (actually got 2) Onkyo HT-RC360 avr for $250. I haven't seen it for that price again, even refurb ones but keep an eye out. Before that, I had an Onkyo TN-XR509 for $200, another amazing deal and i think I've seen near that price a few times since.
You can find some Yamahas for really good prices in newegg when they have sales. Just something to keep an eye on.

I can get the Denon at electronic expo shipped for 283.07 with a coupon code. I think I'm going to pull the trigger unless somebody talks me out of it in the next 15 minutes.

I have both the denon 1612 and the Yamaha rxv667. I recommend the Yamaha. I don't like the remote for the denon fwiw. If u go with the denon look for a vendor that will stand behind it if it fails. acessories4less sent me two bad receivers and did nothing for me

Seems like everybody hates the remote and the user manual for the Denon.

Yes. Seriously. My father has the 1901 (or something like that) and it is a bit tough to navigate both.

Forgot to mention the user manual, it *does* suck. I gave up trying to set it up for 2.1. The remote is weird, is has an on button, and a separate one to turn it off. Its akward to handle, and not easy to tell which side is up and which is down. An annoying thing it does, idk if its exclusive to denon or not, is when u turn your tv on or off, the receiver will go silent, stop playing and music for a few seconds.

yeah, the manual for the denon is bad, but you can go to the avs forum there is a guy that goes by batpig that has set up instructions and Q & A for all Denons. His instruction setup is simple and easy to follow. It was much easier for me to follow his instructions b/c the denon manual was horrible.

Yammy RXV567 is a great 5.1 witrh the latest features including 3D and 1.4HDMI. Only thing I can think of that it doesn't have is an auto calibration/eq function. I got one for my Mom and brother-in-law and they both love it. Can be had for $170 or less.

Thanks for the feedback fellas. I think I've decided to hold off for a bit. Networking and airplay are things that I believe I'll regret not having. I think if I wait till the holidays or until next year when the current new models are "going out of style" that I can pick up those options in addition to the audyssey multi eq xt (or what ever its called) for the price I'm looking to spend. I'll find a way to limp along with what amps I have now until then.
