Default OT: Can some members get 'deputized' to manage the spammers

If others and myself are here we can at least flag the posters and delete them as spam and perm-ban.

Putting a person in the loop to review new account requests would add a burden to administering the board, but would probably deter a lot of the spam too.

What spam? You mean the entire top of the page on the speaker project gallery? Holy moley!

It would deter all of it. Spammers are easily spotted by a person, not so by an automated filter.

on the upper right part of each post, there is an exclamation point in a red triangle that allows you to report a post. Use it?

Deputizing some members here would simply allow for it to get handled quicker.

It would be nice. I'd volunteer to watch the grave yard shift. I've handed out a few Banhammers in my day.

In all honesty though, unless PE has a pretty specific set of parameters (being able to pick and choose) as far as what administrative options they can hand out, they would feel they might be running a risk. I'm not by any means saying anyone here would abuse those powers, but look at it from their end.

Plus as far as spammers go, whether they are bots or actual basement dwelling people, they usually move along after they realize the pond they are phishing at isn't worth while.

I'd zap spammers! I wonder if there is an option to suspend an account for review?
The thing that really bugs me is that your only allowed to use the report post form once every 60 seconds, that's really time consuming.

173 new members in the last 5 days.

Most of those new users have spammer-like nonsensical pseudonyms.

With that many new sign on's there has to be a mis-configuration of the forum software. Otherwise they wouldn't be hitting it this hard.

I'm no computer expert, but of all the forums I frequent, this is the only one where I see this problem. And their efforts are so futile here, such a small forum, members unlikely to fall for their links.
