    Default Imaginary and real

    Just a short story.
I've been working on finishing a couple of pieces of furniture for a client and was at the final stage of polishing the finish to a high gloss. Sort of what you see on a show car.
3M compounds were used, various grits. The polisher: http://www.acetoolonline.com/Milwauk...p/mil-5540.htm
So I am working on this project for a few hours and at some point I get a nice splash of water and polishing compound in the face. It feels cold and it's running down on my forehead and eyes and I am like, ............. thing is a strong eye irritant, I'll be out for a day now. Well, I was wearing this: http://www.amazon.com/3M-7162-Full-F...resperator++3m
with brand new clear shield and couldn't possibly feel the poisonous fluid in my eyes and my face or get it inside the respirator. Sure enough, after a second, I realized that it was only on the exterior of the shield.
Brain add up missing part of the experience.

How did you manage to do that? Did it not seal against your forehead? I have an AO that's similar and I'd rather not do the same thing.

He's saying that the respirator mask did it's job and kept it from getting on his face but that upon seeing the splash in front of his eyes his mind created the imaginary sensation of feeling it on his skin. Our perception is a very interesting thing and many things can influence it to create falsities in our mental creation of our surroundings.

Roman, I'm glad you are OK.

But I thought this post was going to be about numbers...

Interesting topic... Granted it's less dramatic but the baby puts my wife and myself in that position a fair amount of time. I'd not thought much about it but there are probably cues that were picking up on and imagining the effects based on past experience.

There have been a number of time I "felt" that I had gotten wet to reach down and discover my son (almost 5 month) hadn't gone to the bathroom yet. Then within the next couple of minuets he'll need to be changed or will pee in a little pottie we'll hold him over. Through conditioning we've subconsciously learned cue X means this event is going to happen but it is a fairly weird sensation when the brain imagines the event even though it has yet to happen.

Sometimes I catch myself saying "ouch" just because i think something might hurt; and then it doesn't - what a crybaby !

but remember - the needle always hurts more when you see it coming! (I never watch the doctor jam it in, just try focus on the bad mall art on the wall.)

I can't keep myself from sneezing if I drive through a cloud of dust or dirt. Sometimes my eyes will water too. Windows up, fan in recirc, doesn't matter...

I once THOUGHT I'd gotten poison ivy on my arm and got a rash/welts. Turns out it wasn't poison ivy and the rash was just caused by my mind. That was crazy, had no idea THAT could happen.

I'd have to say, getting a needle in the tongue hurts a heck of a lot more, even if you don't watch, than a needle in the arm that you're staring at.
