    Default RS52 full range?

First off, by full range I mean from it's best usable low frequency - probably 500-700hz for the rest of the spectrum.

I was looking at the plots in the PDF and it got me thinking if for on axis, would it be feasible to tame the breakup centered at 13k, to run it in treble as well? I know there is going to be a rise in distortion there, but has anyone tried this? I did a few searches without any results, other than people using a high slop on low passing this mid.

For that application, lots of better choice with drivers designed for the purpose, at similar or better prices.

Say TB W4-1320SIF, Vifa TC9FD-18-08, CSS EL70, Mark Audio CHR-70, etc

I have played it all the way up as an experiment. It's great education on what cone breakup sounds like.

Your two conditions are correct and necessary: tame the breakup (I suspect another good educational experience), and listening on-axis.

(I don't want to discourage you from the RS52. But this

got good results in Zaph's blog.

It's comparable to the RS52, but should be easier to work with. Admittedly it doesn't have the sensitivity though. )

Thanks for the replies. I understand and have looked at the other drivers mentioned, that Vifa being a close second, but I am still interested in trying to see if the RS52 can be forced into submission, completely on axis. I don't care about off-axis results really, and preferably, encourage the beaming.

So, other drivers and options aside, does anyone think this is doable? As benchtester noted, sensitivity is pretty important for the application.

I can't help you on the question of whether it's doable, but I've wondered the same thing myself, so I'd be very interested in hearing about your results if you decide to do it.

If I understand correctly, the RS52 peak propagates as harmonic distortion. So I'd assume such a driver, running "full range" would sound pretty bad.

The W4-1337s can be run full range, though, and it sounds very good - you only need to tame the break-up and use some BSC. I used it for a while on a pair of bipolar tower speakers I had.

    Correct.
It'll hiss like serpent unless the resonance is addresses in the crossover. Running RS-52 full range is not a good idea.

    Cool Re: RS52 full range?

I did! These were my comments at the time:

So I got rid of the squiggley EQ, and have only frequency contouring and wider-band EQ now. This cleared up a bit of sibilance, and the highs are sounding fairly clean now. The problem with using the 2-incher as a tweeter is that the top octave is only flat on-axis. There is a way around this: give the top a rising response. But then one would have toe the speakers in or out to get a good balance at the listening position. Reverting to a 3-way makes the sweet spot wider. I think the RS52 will work well in a car as a tweeter, as the seating position is fixed there. Would also help with sending less energy to the glass, so reflections will be attenuated. It could work.
