Thinking out loud, and suggestions needed
Hello all,
I'm a first time poster, but have been lurking for a couple years now. I didn't even realize that I hadn't registered until I went to start this thread!
Anyway, I'm looking to build some new speakers, hopefully using some of what I have on hand. My first and only speaker I've built so far are the Aurbacs (Aura NS6 + Vifa BC25), and I absolutely loved everything from building them last fall to listening to them today. Right now they're in my office sounding great. I'm thinking about building some larger speakers for my main stereo though. The Aurbacs are great, but I need more of a full range speaker.
On hand I have 6 more NS6s, 8 of the $0.68 Sony buyouts, and two Goldwood GW-10PC-8s. The GWs I bought at the tent sale last year (I'm 20 mins from PE) to replace the 10s in some junk speakers, but ended up not doing so. I paid practically nothing for the GWs, and later find out that they're the most expensive 10 that GW makes. I know that's not saying much, especially at $52 msrp, but they seem well built, with cast frames, gold plated screw on terminals, poly cone and rubber surround. In another thread about the 8" version of the GWs I have a member took a guess and said they might not model well, but probably will sound decent because of the above average build quality. These 10s have a FR of 40-2500hz and are rated at 140w RMS. They claim to be best suited for smaller sealed boxes.
Initially I was thinking of an MTMW similar to the Aurbacs. The Aurbacs are crossed over low (~2k IIRC), but I was wondering how they would sound as a true midrange, crossed higher to the tweet around 4-5k.
All this thinking changed when I saw the Maurbacs. I'm assuming I'd have more success with the proven design rather than the "sort of Maurbac plus a 10" woofer" I mentioned above. The Maurbac will also allow me to use all 6 NS6s I have on hand by making 3, then adding my current Aurbacs for a matched 5.1 set.
So this still leaves me with the 10" Goldwoods. Being seemingly decent drivers I don't want to just throw them in some old speakers as a cheap refoam alternative, but at the same time I don't want to put in a ton of work if this driver isn't any good. There are less expensive Goldwood 10s that seem to go lower with less power, leading me to think mine are meant more for automotive use (which it claims its "great for home or car audio"). This also steers me away from building a dual subwoofer for a 5.1 setup.
So does anyone out there have ANY idea what to do with these? If I didn't have these I'd probably start building the Dayton 8s. Those are the type of speakers I'd like for my main stereo- big, immersing sound that can let loose if called upon to. I just don't want to buy the four DC200s if my two 10s can get me there too.
So again, but in short, what does one do with two Goldwood GW-10PC-8s, when one is looking to build a "Dayton 8"ish sounding speaker.
Thank you so much. Sorry for being so long winded, and I'll hopefully meet some of you at this years tent sale.

Re: Thinking out loud, and suggestions needed
Thanks for the praise for the Aurbacs!
It's extremely gratifying to another person build and like them.
In no particular order:
Redesigning the Arubacs to use the Goldwood 10s as woofers would be a major effort.
Really big job for a newbie, and I'm not inclined to do so.
If you listen to a lot of 2 channel stereo, the Maurbacs in a small 1 1/2 to 2 cubic foot
tower will be great, extension into the mid 40s.
If you just want a kick-@ss HT setup, you can build the Maurbacs in a 1 cubic foot box
and high pass them at 80 with your HTR. They will be able to play pretty darn loud
if high passed.
The Goldwoods don't extend low enough for a true sub, but you (just guessing here)
should be able to put them in a 1 1/2 to 2 cubic foot box with a plate amp and
extend into the high 30s. Download Unibox and model it yourself - it's pretty easy.

Re: Thinking out loud, and suggestions needed
Hi John,
If the T/S specs of the goldwoods are close to their "claims" on the spec page, then I'd say they deserve a more sophisticated box than a small sealed up job. Vented bare minimum, if you have the space, a line or horn would also work well. 20hz extension with them is possible but I wouldn't suggest it, it's not worth the enormous box size for the limited SPL you'll get. a 40hz or 30hz extension goal is a realistic endeavour and leaves room to buy some box gain within semi-reasonable box sizes.

Your Goldwoods (IF the "specs" are accurate - as was previously mentioned) should be capable of upper 30's in a vented box around 1.5-1.7 cu.ft. or so.
