possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
I am trying to pull together a "recession buster" type of DIY kit that would be multi-sourced from several different vendors. These would use: small (7 liter) finished maple veneered cabinets, 5.25" woofer, 1" dome tweeter, passive crossover.
The price, not including shipping, might be around $150 per pair (including cabinets). It would be good to pair these up with a subwoofer, but I can also make some DIY sub suggestions that would not break $100 for parts. This would make a nice mono sub + satellites project.
I'd like to get an idea of how many people are interested in this kind of kit. I can go back to the vendors with the number of people who would go for it and this would help motivate them to get the ball rolling.
So, any takers?

Re: possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
Definitely.
I started a thread a couple weeks back requesting PE to do exactly that... a kit that's a bit smaller than the BR-1's, but cheaper than the Encores.
Curious, why the desire to pull from different vendors? Why not just PE?

Re: possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
I happened to find a boatload of cool cabinets on clearance from some other vendor and know of someone with a couple hundred woofers that are a perfect fit. Hopefully PE can pitch in with a "deal" for the the tweeter and crossover parts (once it has been designed).
So I think that's a good start. I am still working with some other people on different part of the project and it would be helpful to know if there are 5 or 50 people interested.

I've seen numerous posts looking for HT/Desktop speakers, IOW low BSC designs. If you offered an optional xover to allow these placements, you will increase the amount of interest.

The woofers are NHT stock made by Peerless. They are the npt-11-081-1 woofers listed on this page.
Its a low distortion driver with 4.5mm Xmax. F3 would be about 75 Hz with Qts about 0.8.

Re: possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
Cool I have 8 of those woofers but no graphs on them. All kinds of other information on that sight about them but no graphs for the FR. I'm working on a ported MTM with a XT25 Vifa tweet. Box is 20 ltrs. Looks like the DCR is 6 ohms. That could be why it shut my amp down on the test run; might have to do something about that.
How about the boxes; where are you getting them? If you do not want to spill the beans about them that is fine. I might have and idea. But I won't spill the beans eather.

I will hold off announcing the source for the cabinets for now. If the kit doesn't come together, I will just tell everyone how to go about getting the parts and let people do their own thing.

Re: possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
I would prolly be interested, as well as a few of my friends who are looking for their first time speaker build. I'd like this kit idea since the budget makes it almost perfect for a "gift" speaker.

Re: possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
I'd be interested. I have 5 of the "other" 5.25" woofers listed on Jack's page (no longer available) along with the 096 tweeter (also no longer available).
Planning on a 5.1 eventually...

Not a bad little driver....very reminiscent of the Peerless 850108. I bought several pairs of these directly from AB Tech services off eBay before I found the JHidley site. I took measurements of them, but have since lost all data during a hard drive crash on the lappy over a year ago. But as I remember it, they had a pretty smooth response.

Re: possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
Charlie, if you would like I could send you some of my drivers so you can horse around with them and work something up. Then send them back when you are done. That way you do not have to spend the min. of $80 to get a batch for a trial run.

Re: possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
Hey Zeek,
No worries, I am kind of working with Jack behind the scenes on this one, although probably not over the next week or so due to the holidays. He is evaluating at what level he wants to get involved.
If there are more people interested, I think I can get him and a few other folks to be more interested as well. If the project doesn't come together I will just post all the info and let people take it from there.

Re: possible recession buster DIY project - anyone interested???
Have you tried posting something on HTGuide as well. There are a lot of DIY builders over there and people who loved the Recession Busters from Madisound. Just a thought to gain more interested.

Thanks for the tip. I will likely post again on a couple of other forums as soon as I have things a little more pulled together...

I also bought a bunch of those drivers but have yet to complete a project with them. I did find this datasheet: http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/attac...an-smaller.jpg

recession buster DIY project - UPDATE JAN 18th
JAN 18th - Update:
There WILL be a passive crossover developed for this speaker in the next month or so by Mark K. I will post more details when I have them.
The tweeter for this project has been upgraded to the Vifa DQ25SC16-04 available from MAD, which is a great low cost ($12) neo tweeter.
Prototypes of the tweeter adapter plates are currently being machined.
The woofer is still the NHT 5.25" with the aluminum shorting ring.
This is shaping up to be a nice budget project!
