Did you have any experience testing speakers prior to buying your OmniMic? Only asking because I just got one too, and I have no experience at all! Can you give me any pointers on where to begin to learn how to use this? For starters, I'd like to just test my JBL bookshelves and see if I can at least figure out what everthing means and how it all works!

No experience at all, I read speakerbuilding 201 and that was about it. I first started by just starting the software and playing around and then started reading the help files. Then I did my first 1W/1M test with a couple bookshelf speakers using the full sweep and my AV receiver. I did some driver testing by just laying the speaker on my carpet slightly elevated to vent with 1W/1M. I am going to build the enclosure for my drivers and do a second test with the drivers in the box. I would be nice if someone had a simple tutorial on how to get started, doing the tests, and doing neer field testing. My biggest help was reading the help files.

I went ahead with the full range sweep with no cap, the morel dome I am using has a 10ms 1000 watt rating. Thanks for the replies, I will most likely use caps on future testing.

I use the fullrange sweep with no cap for domes. With ribbons I would not do that nor would I for any high level test. With a nearfield test say 2-10 cm distance and 80 some dB. I really should redeem myself and use a 100 micro cap

If you care about the tweeter, always use the cap. Even with the low cut sweeps, you are not protected from hum, pops or any other thing between source and speaker that can make noise below the intended cutoff.

I use 50uF for 8 ohm tweeters, 100uf for 4 ohm tweeters.

The 50Hz tone used for setting your voltage is 50Hz because standard multimeter will be most accurate for measuring 50-60Hz frequency for standard 120V circuits.

Was able to do another test with my bookshelves and wow..... no way I can use DATS. Just to get to 1 watt at 4 ohms I had the Yamaha turned up over my normal listening level (The level I use when watching Tron).

I think I am getting the hand of this, and need to be careful at this level.

Just picked up the Omnimic earlier this week and was wanting to know what you guys like to use for your signal source and had a few other questions?

First off what do you guys use for a source? I did some FR readings of my bookshelves using my PS3 and Yamaha but the SPL levels were not right. I later found that the level for the mic in the computer was set to 33% and not 100%. I also noticed that I am able to use my DATS as an audio output to the driver and used that to do some simple testing. I later found after reading more of the help files, that you are to use the 50 Hz tone to set your voltage then do your measurements. Back to my original question, what do you guys like to use?

Second question, when doing the test do you use the high sign wave signal when testing tweeters or do you install a cap to help protect the tweeter?

If you guys have any other tips or tricks that would be helpful also.
