I'm not going to say that this came easy to me, I've been researching acoustics for years to gain the understanding I have today. From my point of view the Omnimic software is easy, IMO it is as plug and play as the device can be, but I guess not everyone will agree with my position on that. Professionally I work in electronics, and my electronics background surely helped a lot to understand wave and signal interaction, so when I started learning acoustics the understanding of harmonics, intermodulation, phase etc came easily since it was the same principals applied to electronic theory. For example when I first started designing speaker, I saw many people looking at the "reverse null" and I kept wondering why you would do that when you already have the phase information, later to find the people were doing this because they didn't fully understand the phase information to begin with.

Anyway, shoot me a PM if you like, I'll try and help you out where I can. I can even email you a book or two if you like, I've collected a few over the years in digital form.
Thanks a lot for the offer sir! I've had a few offers for help from a few of the kind people on this board, and I appreciate it a lot, believe me. Once I get a bit further in my understanding of this all, I will take up the offer...

...but I don't want to be that kid in school that when the teacher says after explaining 20 minutes of something, "are there any questions on how to do this?" the kid says "yes" The teacher says "what don't you understand?"..... and the kid says "All of it!"

I have a lot of respect for guys like you who learned and figured out a lot of the theory behind what makes speakers/sound do, and work the way they do. You figured this stuff on your own so to speak. I have read a bit on lots of topics, and have some understanding of the basics, but I probably won't become as well versed as many of you are.

I'm a guy who loves to design and build cabinets, but who has not been able to yet fully 'get' the crossover thing. I feel that being able to take measurements and design a crossover from these measurements is part of being a complete speaker designer in my opinion. I have no problem with building other people's designs, I do it a whole lot and get tons of enjoyment from it. I would just like to "get it" myself soon. Time is a problem, when I'm working, that's pretty much all I can do, my students really take it out of me!

Well, thanks again for the offer, and for being understanding of me/us who are slow of understanding!

Re: Any tutorial videos on using Omnimic?

I myself also after a year cant figure it out. I am much more of a visual learner than reading, and also when the instructions say to now do ,,, this ,,, but I say how ?

A straight forward video with basic steps for a two way to get your basic crossover with where and how to transfer measurements, and then a part two and or a part three for in depth politically correct with all the alignments , phase , etc. would be such a great thing.

Maybe a group of designers will get together and split up the different parts of the steps so it will not be so time consuming for one person.
I think this might me the main reason for the hold up.
      Thanks,
      Dave G.

I've only played with mine and haven't tried to use it seriously yet, so I don't really know if I need a video.

Saying that, I think it would pay Partsexpress to do a video themselves. I'm sure it would encourage more people to buy it, if they were shown how easy it is to use.

It's pretty straightforward but you do need to understand acoustic concepts. I'd be happy to walk anyone through some of it (not all but much) if they're in range to Tustin, CA. I haven't played with all the features but I do "Get it".

Just curious if you guys think a picture tutorial might be helpful? It might be easier for a couple people to put one together similar to the way rpb and ryanbouma did on the Holm Impulse user tutorial. If so I would be willing to help. I happen to have a project I will be measuring in the near future and could take pics of the measuring setup throughout the various phases and screenshots of what I am doing in omnimic.

Killa, I think that would probably help tremendously for many of us.

Hopefully, in the future we can have a super-post in the OmniMic subforum that we keep adding videos, picture tutorials to containing all of these resources once they start falling into place.

Thank you for your willingness to help with this. Many of us will appreciate it quite a bit! If I can do anything to help out with this somehow, I'm more than willing.

P.S. I was hoping for a little more input from members here. Guys, please chime in and give your two-cents if you're interested in what's going on here. If not, it may not end up happening, and that would be a shame.

It may take me a while to get to this as I am currently working on another project. I may need help with with figuring out the best way to go about all of this. I am not the most organized person :o

Here is the basic idea of what I was thinking

1 basic measurement with omnimic and how to save measurement
                2 Finding offsets
                3 using the blender

All the steps would have pics of mic position along with a wiring diagram, and screenshots of what is happening in omnimic.

Feel free to expand on anything but I only plan on going over the basics for now. I think this will be enough for someone to get their files into the program of their choice. If I leave anything out anyone thinks is important let me know.

Re: Any tutorial videos on using Omnimic?

I was doing some measurements with my omnimic this weekend. I was measuring the same speaker on 3 different amps and 2 different pc's just to see the variance (speaker and mic never moved). The cheap laptop vs my high end desktop have some differences. After going into the settings the omnimic volume on my desktop was set at "1" on windows 7 and on the laptop its set to approx (40-50%) i have xp (doesnt have a #). I have read the manual and it does not state a value but i do know for certain it makes a difference because the desktop i had to turn up the volume higher to hit the 80db mark and it was louder than when i used my laptop. The traces look to measure very similarly between both computers i just had to increase the volume on the amps with the lower mic volume setting.

I assume it will be all relative if you use the same volume, mic placement and pc for your measurements you just might not know the actual spl. I could buy another spl meter but seems redundant with omnimic!

Im going to email PE on this just too see if they have a recommended setting because i cannot find one in the manual. So far omnimic is very straight forward it tells you what to do at the top bar. I agree the why is more important than the how.

                    .
You are correct. As long as you leave the volume at the same setting for each driver in the system the actual spl doesn't matter. You just need it loud enough to be above the noise floor.

I have not really touched it for the past several months. I have a small two way speaker that I've been messing with that I should be finished with cabinet-wise in the next several weeks. I plan on breaking out my Omnimic and giving it another try once those cabinets are buttoned up.
Yeah, I sort of just dropped this because I didn't want to push the issue too much. I see lots of people are peeking at this thread so I know there's a need there. If I can get good enough at using it and can explain things enough to not look like a doofus, I'll make some sort of video myself... that's a big "if" though.

I totally forgot about this :o But I haven't really built anything since other than playing around with an active setup but I already had measurements before I posted in this thread. I have gotten side tracked with music and other things and have been busy.

Tom feel free to PM me if you need help with measuring. I don't think I will get to this anytime soon but am willing to help if anyone else decides to try.

Yes, I find it a bit strange that PE hasn't introduced a video tutorial for this system. After all, we live in the age when video tutorials are a prominent feature on the web and yet we still have none for this system.
Video tutorials are not expensive and are quite simple to make. I use Camtasia 8 for tutorials at work. A very nice program. Video tutorials are an extremely valuable marketing tool for products and I'm confident that if PE invested the will, they would quickly see the monetary value in such an undertaking.
The PE forum is full of highly knowledgeable and experienced people and I'm sure they would lend a hand to the project.

Come on PE, we are still waiting.
No matter where you go, there you are.

is there a microphone and other SW a first time speaker DIY'er that isn't as expensive as OmniMic avail to take measurements?

i'd like to take some measurements on my first DIY speakers , (almost done), but 300.00 for Omnimic is a bit steep for my wallet for my needs.

You can try ARTA or HolmImpulse, but you'll still need a mic like UMM-6 or EMM-6 to use it.
