  • Pyle PH12s CD Horn Lens...

Hello I am looking for response data on the Pyle PH12s 90x40 horn lens. This is a CD horn and I am looking for information for designing a correct CD compensation shelf filter. This horn looks very similar to a Dayton horn no info on that one either they are almost identical with the Pyle being just a little larger than the Dayton. Anyone here with any experience with this horn? It wold look to be a fine choice for a quality two way. Thanks for any additional info. Best regards Moray James.

    Detailed Description of the PH12S:
    PH12S
Pyle Pro PH12S Screw-On Type Constant Radiation Horn Model PH12S Part No. PH12S

    Material: ABS Resin
    Nominal Coverage Angle (HxV)-6 dB:90°x40°
    Cut Off Frequency: 1000 Hz
    Throat Diameter: 26mm
Mounting Type: Zinc Screw Insert 1 3/8''- 18 UNEF

You could also try the SEOS12 unless you already have the Pyle on-hand. As far as the circuit, I don't know where you'd find that info if you haven't "googled" it already.

Thanks for the response. I have sent requests to both Pyle and Dayton as both horns are so similar. Do you have a link for info on the horn that you mentioned? I don't have either horn but the size dispersion and price are right on these. Thanks for your assistance. Best regards Moray James.

The two horns are identical. The "difference" in size is from rounding up or down the metric measurement, or maybe the mounting flange was cut from the mold a tiny bit larger for one. The only other difference is the price that each importer wants.

Cuppa Joe thanks: I appreciate the reply and info. I had a goods look at the two horns and they did look very similar close enough from the photos that I figured they woould behave pretty much the same. Hoe did you find out they were the same? Do you know who designed and built them? Neither Pyle or Dayton had any real info nor suggestions for matching drivers not even the entrance angle of the horn. I would like to get a crossover design which will work with this horn so who better than from the designer?
Have you had the chance to listen to one of these horns and if so can you comment? I appreciate the assistance here thank you all. Best regards Moray James.

Actually, there's a couple more slight differences. One uses a brass thread while the other is aluminum; one is ABS while the other is polycarbonate (slightly stronger). However, if you bought one of each & placed them side-by-side, it would become obvious that they came from the same mold. Peavey uses this horn for their inexpensive PV Series loudspeakers, so I guess you can get a live demo at a music store. I haven't bothered to track down the overseas manufacturer; most likely it's China or South Korea. I know nothing else about them. Umm, they might be a good match for a Motorola (CTS) 1188A?

You said Peavey used this horn in their PV series of loudspeakers. Peavey and not Pyle? Thanks for the additional information. EV used to make a similar horn about 11" square in the Hp series I think I may track that down and see if I can find any xove info that would be an excellent starting point. Best regards Moray James.

I am waiting to see f Peavey can find a schematic for the PV112. I looked it the old EV version of this horn, they did a number of versions. In the 12" and the 15" two ways they did not use any compensation for the horn at all in the network. Best regards Moray James.

The flimsy budget horn that Dayton, Pyle & Peavey imports from their overseas manufacturer bears only a superficial resemblance to the old Electro-Voice HP Series horns of 15+ years ago, and you (probably) won't find any spec sheets or SPL graphs for the PH12. The EV HP94 & HP64 were beefy 2" bolt-ons, as were most of the series. Are trying to design a loudspeaker based on the idea that the PH12 might be a low-cost substitute for an HP Series horn?

Re: Pyle PH12s CD Horn Lens...

EV did make a resin plastic version called the HP64M which uses a one inch driver see link http://reconingspeakers.com/products...64m-horn-lens/ I was more interested in using a one inch driver for this project. The one inch wont require to end eq. I was mostly interested in seeing how the CD compensation was done in the network. JBL use an L-pad Klipsch use an auto transformer. I figured since the EV and the Pyle were so close in size it would be a fair assumption that they would have similar roll off and so the CD comp network could be applied to both. Best regards Moray James.

                      Here ya go:

Horizontal polars. Blue is the average of the first four. The other four curves are on-axis, 15, 30, and 45 degrees off axis.

Vertical polars. Dip at 13,500 may be a resonance inside of the diffraction slot, which is 1" wide and about 4" deep. (13,500 hz is 1" long.)

These curves are equalized as close to flat as I could get in about 20 minutes of work.

Driver is a JBL 2408H-1. Don't use this horn if you're not prepared to add clay or bondo to smooth the throat. There's a gap of close to .25", which will really wreck the response. The build quality is nowhere as good as the QSC horns that I usually use, but it can be fixed with about an hour of work. Some more data in my threads titled "Monster Massive" and "wide vs narrow angle horns" over at diy audio.

Thank you very much for posting. I found the body of these horns to be decent I bought a pair of Peavey then Dayton's as well as the Pyle versions and on all the throats were very poor. I had a friend machine the throat ends off two pair so to fit on machined mounting plates with a new throat of 1.4 inch. Very much appreciate your posting this information. Best regards Moray James.
