  • Nubie/ need some info about speakers for my P.A.

I have a samson 300 watt p.a. 4ohm output and would like to build a 2 way speaker system w/ crossovers ? for it? (I didn't even know what a driver was untill today) I am a nubie so if you are nice enough to reply you may have to talk real slow and in terms only a knott head could understand. I have checked out some of the projects others have built (awesome projects) but I don't know if they are suited for my little P.A. ? I do carpentry projects so I feel the cabs. won't be a problem for me it's all the techno jumbo I need clarification? So if you feel like helping a Brother out I would appreciate it.

For P.A. (= "loud" - using AS a PA?) or for home stereo/HT use?
    Budget?

Home and At church small venue (indoors 20 x 50 room ?)I didn't think I this P.A. could be very loud? Yes budget is a concern. My Pa mixer cost me $60.00 so I didn't want to spend a lot if it works out maybe I can go bigger later? Thanks for the great questions. Phil

How large of a box can you manage?

Check out the econowave or watch the craigslist if you are on a tight budget. (Used Yamaha clubs are popular)
DIY is not necessarily the more frugal road to go down after you do the math.

What will this PA system amplify.. just voice, voice and acoustic guitar, a full band?
And what is you budget? Realistically it's gonna cost $150-200 for even the cheapest components worth buying to build a pair of small PA speakers and you still got to build the boxes, those will do an OK job for an instrument/singer combo but won't handle much more.

We usually have 2 mic. for voice, acoustic and bass guitar can have their own amp,but it would be nice if I could run the electric drums through it? I have 1 speaker cab. with what I think is a eminence 12" woofer 67-8312 square magnet (does anyone know how I can test the ohms) also there is no watt output Info . The horn (4x 10 1/2) is a super Mid range MG mm100 max power 40 watt 8 ohm. there is no crossover. This cab. doesn't sound to bad?

Re: Nubie/ need some info about speakers for my P.A.

Eminence hasn't made sqaure magnet speakers since the 80's. I grew up on them, but they were long gone around the time Eminence started getting serious. A 12 from that vintage would be good for 100 watts, 150 tops, and would more likley be voiced to be a guitar speaker than PA. To test the ohms, put it on an ohm meter (or "digital multimeter"). You'll read the DC value, whic is a little less than the AC "impedance". Without any crossover, an "8 ohm", as in, non-piezo mid/tweeter horn will die a quick death. If it just has a capacitor, it may survive for a while, but not if you play it loud. In any case, you proabaly won't want to run an electronc (or mic'ed) drum kit thru it. I'd just relegate it to monitor duty, and either build some econowaves or find a pair of used Yammies or something like them.

Well I have done a search in partsexpress and in photo gallery and I could not find econowave speakers. Yammies are yamaha's? Is there a speaker in the photo gallery that might work for this system and needs or can anyone explain the econowave speakers. Sorry the person with special needs is back.

The econowaves are mostly discussed on the main forum. Dig in there and you'll find them. They're just a variant of your basic 2-way light duty pro speaker, usually adapted for high output HT usage.

                    Yammies = Yamahas, correct.

There is a group producing Econowave kits now in different sizes, to amplify drums you're gonna want something with a 12 or 15" woofer.

I would really consider listening to the advice from Jont here, and consider going the used route. Hit the pawn shops and craigslist. There is always someone getting out of the DJ biz, or someone who has just upgraded. Sometimes, even if the drivers are shot, the boxes are good and you can get them for almost nothing.

Just avoid the all to present 15" 2 way.

It would help to have someone with some experience help out though, as some of the used stuff is garbage in itself.

Those are not econowave kits. They are high efficiency designs and will work for the OP but they are designed for the drivers used. The econowave design was developed to work with many different woofer combos by slight adjustments to the crossover network. While I am sure the econowaves can sound good the xo's are not optimized for the specific drivers.
