  • looking for cab ideas for 4 kilomax 18"s

My friend has 2 dual 18 eaw sub enclosures loaded with eminence kilomax drivers. The cabs have seen better days and he would like me to build new him some new subs. Type of music his new band will be playing is flyleaf, P.O.D, etc. He is the drummer if that makes any difference. He has eaw dual 15 3-way tops.

I have thought of making four single subs to make moving them easier, or adding casters into the design for the same reason.

This will be a learning experience for me as i have not done any sound reinforcement before. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Duane

The kilomax is not a very good driver, in an 8cu.ft box tuned to 35hz it will only take 500w before exceeding xmax. Just how bad are the current boxes? Unless they're falling apart some bondo and a fresh layer of bed liner would make them look like new.

      Thanks for the reply Paul,
I have been told that One of them has a rattle, if you press on the side it stops. He just doesn't think that they were built very well, and they have gotten banged up over the years. He would also like to have them easier to move, (adding wheels). i have not inspected them. Fixing them up and replacing them might be an option.

I'm just learning about pro sound. What would you suggest is a better driver?

Yeah the Kilomax is not the best choice for really anything. If you want to stick with the Eminence brand the Sigma Pros are excellent for the price and can work very well in about 5 cubic feet around 33-35 Hz. The Dayton PA460 is also really good bang for the buck for smallish cabs.
        Your results may vary.

The king if the heap in bang for your buck is the Peavey LowRider, in a 6.-7cu-ft box tuned to 35z it'll take full power and produce as much or more output than any other driver regardless of brand. From Eminence the Definimax or Impero drivers are what you want depending upon budget(at the very low end the SigmaPro is a good choice as already mentioned), and then you step up into more expensive driver like the B&C TBX100. JBL also makes a couple very good drivers but they have a grossly overinflated retail markup that I believe is intended to keep them from showing up in all sorts of badly designed and /or constructed DIY cabs and tarnishing the company's reputation. Otherwise they fall somewhere between the $200 PV and the $300 B&C in terms of performance so there is no good reason they should cost double or triple.

And if you do have the budget to consider those overpriced JBLs, B&C makes some killer drivers in the $400 to $600 price class. They have more output than the Lowriders and run stone cold at 1000 watts. And can take higher pressures than the PV without folding up. That's what double the price SHOULD get you. There are other imports with similar capabilities, but B&C beats 'em on price.

Some of the PRVs look interesting, but so far no reports from the field. They look like they use the same frames as B&C, but it's the motors I'm wondering about.

I like Paul's idea, keep it simple and recycle what you have.

For rock music sub 40hz wub wub is not as important as a strong 80hz kick to the gut.

I will see what happens on my end. Most likely fix up what they have.

                I have looked at several 18" drivers though. I like the PRV18SW2200. 5.5cf @35hz F3=36 f6=32, 1000 watts before xmax, 125db at that power.

                Thanks for the replies!

I talked to my boss this morning. (We run most mornings.) He agreed that fixing up the old enclosures would be the best thing to do. If he builds new they will have new drivers also.
