help with 4 way crossover points

can someone please provided some general freq i can start off with to tune my system. i just moved from 2way to 4 way..

this is what im trying now... does this look ok "in general"

sub - 90hz
midbass - 90hz - 300
mids - 300 - 1500
horn - 1500 up

Crossover points are determined by the frequency response, displacement limited output and dispersion patterns of the various elements, so one cannot make an informed decision on where to cross without all that information.

So true . . . but also, MOST 3-ways cross to the tweeter near 3kHz, so it seems unusual to have a FOUR way where the tweeter's got to go even another octave lower?

Depends what the mid and tweeter are. For a typical 4 or 5" cone to a tweeter it probably is more than a bit low. But little bitty cones don't have squat for output unless you use many of them. With just about any really high power midrange (8, 10 or 12" - and especially if horn loaded) it's gonna start either rolling off or narrowing the pattern by the time you get to 1.5k.

Lower end 15" 3 ways using 5" or 6" cone mids will likely cross at 3k (so they don't blow up the cheap tweeter). They may be called "PA speakers", and sold as "pro" but are generally not considered "professional". When users add piezos or bullet tweeters to 2-ways to add sizzle, they typically cross even higher. And not everybody in the audience benefits from the tweeter, either.

An old-school 4 way horn loaded system might cross exactly where the OP was suggesting. May or may not be optimal, depending on what he's starting with.

I was running my 18s til around 90
15's up to around 300
12's up to 1200 / 1500
then my 2" driver to cover the rest..

I run a dbx pa+ where on 3way... and the 12s and comp driver has a 2way xover.. it sounds pretty good but I just wanted to make sure I was in the general ball park.. sounds like I just need to play with it a little.

Some might question the need for the 15's and suggest more capable 12's (or more 12's) - if they are displacement limited. A 2x12/2" makes a really nice box. Your arrangement will give more amplifier headroom - splitting the bands does reduce the peak voltage requirements. But it will take more cubic feet to get X dB. Is this a PA or a man cave system?

The 4 way I presented at Grinnel were crossed at 90, 750. 3000. was told crossovers were seamless.

this is a main system... (mobile dj mostly for large clubs/events)

the 12's I use is the b&c 12pe32... when I used 2 12's, seem like i needed something to cover down to 100hz as the 12's. not enough deepness down there... but the vocals did sound good...

Those are fine above 200Hz or so, but not lower, due to the very low Qes and short xmax, not because they're twelves. The right twelves in the right cabs would handle 90Hz to 1.5kHz no problem, allowing a much smaller and simpler 3-way system.

the 12's I use is the b&c 12pe32...

Designed for wide bandwidth horns, was considered a good replacement for the unobtainium EVM12L. Won't play low enough in a conventional box. B&C's got some new ones that will stomp this in a mid horn (12FW76) or conventional box (12TBX100). Even cheap Eminence (Delta Pro 12) is decent down to 80 - and doubled up will keep up with TH18s. But there is something to be said for using what you already have - until you embark on a new design.

that's true... i'd like to retire from this hobby before I spend that kind of money on a big new design...
