  • You can tell me about Crest amps - Specifically CA-9

Hi, I'm possibly going to be buying a used but clean and unabused Crest CA9 to replace a Behringer EP4000 for home theater subwoofer duty. Nothing wrong with the Behringer but I have a possibly buyer for that amp and the Crest I can get for a decent price. They are reliable I suppose and hopefully bass control will be even better than the EP4000?
Any input on these amps would be great.

PS. Not that I'd be using it for mid/high use but are they decent for sound quality as well?

    Thanks

I almost picked up a Crest CA9 in my hunt for a subwoofer amp, but ended up with a killer deal on my QSC CX902. Everything I was told about the Crest is basically you can't go wrong.

I think it is a terrific decision and should last you a long while.
    Builds - C-Killa - Speedsters - LithMTM - Talking Sticks - Pocket Rockets - Khanspires - Dayton RS Center - RS225/28A - Kairos - Adelphos - SEOS TD12X - Dayton 8 - Needles - 871S - eD6c - Overnight Sensations - Tritrix (ported) - Lineup F4 - Stentorians - The Cheapies - Tub Thumpers - Barbells - Tuba HT - Numerous subwoofers - probably missing a few...... :p

Thanks joey. You know what, I'm now considering something else as well. I now also have the opportunity to pick up a Crown K2 for a bit more money. Well maybe 30% more but its not fan cooled so I might like that aspect of it more. Doing some reading now about this K2

The K2 is class D. Crown's "BCA" is a form of class D that removes a couple of the typical failure modes of class D. It's touted as being sonically superior, but in the end it's the same. The real advantage is completely removing body diode conduction in the switching transistors. That only matters when you're beating the [email protected] out of it. It's less efficient than modern class D, but they still run cool compared to class AB amps. The sound is as good as any other quality PA amplifier.

The Crest CA's are solid workhorses. The CA9 is the same rated FTC power as an RMX2450 (EP4000), but will really deliver it. The only thing that ever goes wrong with them is an occasional fan or sticky speaker muting relay.
