  • JBL M209-8A spec

I have a pair of JBL 209-8A mid-range drivers but don't know all the specs. I want replace a mid in a different system that has a 5,500 k hz crossover point between mid/tweeter. The woofer/midrange x-over point is 800hz this mid/woofer this is not a problem.

I'm curious at the high freq range is of this driver. I hope not to change crossover, except for the attenuation for mid.

    Thanks for your ear,
    Ed

    Hi Ed,

So, you're saying that you want to cover 800 to 5500 Hz with an 8" driver?

The JBL 8 (or any 8) is not suited for this application. Drivers of this diameter become increasingly directional above @ 1600 Hz, and also exhibit accompanying attenuation.

IMO, this frequency band would be better served by a 2" compression driver/horn.

    E-mail with any questions.

    Peace!

Thanks for the info. The current mid is a peerless 4" (with rotten foam) hence the higher ability for the x-over I guess. Trying to be frugal and do it with what I have laying around. I'll will have to rethink the rebuild and spend money.

      Thanks again,
      Ed

Simple rule of thumb, if you double the cone diameter you halve the frequency that it can run to before crossing over. I'd re-foam the Peerless.

There are countless options that will set you back next to nothing. Check out some of the buyout options at PE, and keep an eye on the classifieds here.

Any info on the system or specs of the current mid so we could offer some suggestions?
