  • Double Chambered Reflex Cabinet

Just started a new project today, I am building a single 18 in double chambered reflex cabinet. The reason for this style cabinet is for versatility of woofer choice. The woofer to be installed (temporarily) is a B-52 220S (which has a custom cone installed in a Celestion FTR-4080F frame).

Problem is I have 2 of the B-52 woofers, 1 of which is destroyed. I called around and no-one has the recone kit for the woofer, but the folks at PE told me they can place another cone in the basket. Celestion told me I can use a factory FTR-4080F cone in it. To do this properly, I need to do both of them.

I have a party I need to play at next weekend, so I need a box that can be flexible with the choice of woofer (I plan on keeping the cabinet after the recones).

The cabinet (subwoofer) planned is 13 cu ft total which will be divided into 2 cabinets at a 1/3 & 2/3 ratio. All the vents (3) are going to be 4X6, 9 inches long, I'm pretty sure that calculates to around 25 Hz & 50 Hz F3 points. It is going to be driven with a QSC RMX850 bridged mono for the party, my Klipsch Belle's will be doing the 100 Hz and upwards duties.

Anybody got any words of wisdom you could pass on about this project, good-bad-otherwise? If you guys are interested, I might be able to get some photos during the construction (use my phone's camera).

I am a big fan of this style of box but I think your statement should be a woofer that is flexible with the box. Good luck and defiantly take some pictures.
If we all reacted the same way, we'd be predictable, and there's always more than one way to view a situation.
What's true for the group is also true for the individual. It's simple: Overspecialize, and you breed in weakness.
    It's slow death.

Murphy has his foot in my a$$ right now, Lowes has some nice wood but no functional panel saw. Home Depot has some OK wood but their cuts can vary as much as a quarter inch. I bought enough wood on the first trip to assemble the top, bottom and 2 sides. I then measured the box and went to HD and had them cut down the front, back and center divider. Since I had to sell most of my tools in Arizona to move to Ohio, I bought a jig-saw at HD to make any adjusting cuts. Front baffle has had the ports cut & mounted, speaker hole cut and baffle trimmed to fit box. Ports have to be different than expected due to wood quality (have to brace them). Before placing divider in cabinet, I will have to re-calculate the cubic footage due to larger port assemblies. The cabinet is definitely large and will be well braced, hopefully it will sound good and go low enough to substantiate the efforts. It is my intent to use this speaker as a sub for the home theater when not DJ'ing a party. Pictures to come....

The port looks kinda strange as I braced it externally to keep the rectangular shape. The woofer mounted is the one that's no good, perfect to make sure the cutout is the proper size.

Speaker is finished to the testing point, front baffle is removable so that I can brace it where it vibrates. I will be picking up some window insulation so make sure the front baffle seals tight. Picking up the RMX-850 tomorrow. My son's party is Saturday at our condo complex clubhouse - will spend the morning testing with REW if possible.

RMX-850 was defective, had to go to the music store to get it replaced. They loaned me a RMX-1450 to use until other amp gets fixed. Crossed my fingers and ran the setup without any testing (no time). Set RMX-1450 gain at 3 oclock (Subs), QSC 1200 at 12 oclock (Klipsch) and made all other adjustments at crossover and EQ. Without trying to pat myself on the back, this was by far the hardest hitting single 18 cabinet that I can recall ever hearing.
