  • QSC PL380 or Itech 6000 for Sub Duty

Ok, built two new single 18" sub copies to match two existing reflex boxes and loaded all four with almost perfectly matched Dayton drivers (http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-...8-ohm--295-042). Holy crap these things pound harder and tighter and go deeper than any sub I've ever used, but that's another story.

These are used for live sound with my band and I either run one or two per amp channel depending on the venue. Problem is now I quickly run out of headroom with an XTI4000 (Yeah....I know) and while my PLX3602 does a bit better and hits harder than the xti, it too runs out of juice way too soon. These subs are just begging for more and because of limited A/C mains at most of our venues, I need a better solution besides adding more amps and/or bridging. I can usually get at least two dedicated 20amp circuits so I can always dedicate the sub amp.

With most relevant things considered and researched (weight, watts, power consumption, etc.) I've narrowed it down to either the PL380 or Itech6K. Both can be had used for around the same price and spec out reasonably close to each other. Power output specs are close and I don't need the DSP on the Itech but the Itech wattage specs seem truer as they are listed at 20-20 whereas the PL is listed at 1K. The PL seems to have a much better record but the Itech seems like it may have better power specs and be more forgiving on A/C fluctuations. I know how the numbers game works so I was hoping for opinions/comments/suggestions based on some real world experience with these amps on sub duty. Thanks.

Another suggestion: Get a good used Crown ( based upon experience with driving 18" JBL in a touring system )

Well the Itech is a Crown but if you're talking about the Macrotech line, I'd love to have a rack of them but the weight and cost differential is a factor. It's mainly the newer lighter power-switching amps I'm looking at as opposed to the tried and true iron boat anchors. The old back ain't what it used to be!

Somehow I figured weight was an issue - in my case amps are in rolling racks.
These old workhorses have plenty of current reserve - sufficient for years of robust performance in rough duty touring scenarios.
FWIW: I still know musicians that won't part with their DC300.

Weight is definitely a factor and yes all my FOH gear is in rolling racks but someone still has to lift it! As it turns out, I found a hell of a deal (authorized dealer unadvertised sale) on a brand new PL380 for only $90 more than the used one I was looking at. Full factory warranty and brand new in box for just under $1500 shipped!!!! Those are usually just over 2 grand new so yeah, kind of hard to pass that one up. Should be here in a few days. We'll see what she can do!
