  • Recommend an EV SRO/12 replacement for me.

I need to select a speaker to replace a classic "coffee can" AlNiCo Electrovoice SRO/12 speaker.
Many consider them to be the best speaker ever created, and I need to find something new to replace two of them in a 2x12 guitar combo amplifier. There's nothing wrong with them, the problem is that they just aren't mine. They belong to a friend, who understandably wants them back. I'm using them in a 1980's original issue Peavey Renown 400, and using it with a classic 1974 Fender-Rhodes Mark I Stage Piano. Historically, people used a Fender Twin with a Rhodes piano, but I like the tone I get out of the solid-state Renown 400 with the SRO's, and i can use it for guitar as well.

The Renown 400 is rated a 200-watt amplifier, so I need something that can handle it, but sound as sweet as the SRO.
So if you had to do the unthinkable and replace a classic EV SRO/12 with something modern that doesn't cost $600 for a pair, what would you recommend?

That would be an EVM 12L.

I contacted tech support at both Parts Express and Eminence directly and got replies from both. I think Eminence has a good recommendation.
They make a speaker called the Legend EM12 which is their answer to the EVM 12L. They run about $150 each.

The response and most of the specs are pretty close except for xmax. The Eminence is 1.27mm, the EVM is 3.3mm. That means the Eminence will have 7dB less output in the lows, which is pretty significant. With guitar you probably won't find it problematic, but with piano it may be.
