Very nice finish on those boxes Scott, how are you powering/processing them? And what are the subs? Love to hear as much detail as you would like to share.

Those are pretty sweet-looking. Great work!

Care to shed some details of our build? Also, are those THs in the last picture?

I used duratex on them. My first time using it. I've used truck bed lining in the past. The system is used for live sound. Using a Soundcraft Expression 3 (love this thing) mixer. Was using a DCX2496 for processing, but switched to a DBX PA2. Thinking I liked the DCX a little better. To power the tops I am using a Crown Macro Tech 5000i for mids and a Macro Tech 600 for the highs.

The subs are Cyclops CBe-18s; Tapped Horns. These things impress me every time I hear them. I loaded them with 18 sound 18lw2400s. Running 4 for outdoor shows. I power them with a Crown Macro Tech 9000i.

I built all the cabinets. Being an engineer for a millwork company makes it easy. The tops are nothing special as far as building. Just a reflex cabinet ported on the back. I am trying to put together a plan for them. Had a couple individuals ask.

          Hi Scott,

          Nice looking boxes.

Did roll or spray the Duratex?

I like the grille. Did you have it custom cut?

Agreed, a professional-looking build. I'd also like to know about your grille source?

I'm curious to know if you've taken the opportunity to A/B compare the Cyclops with a simple BR using the same (or similar) driver. Do you believe that the gain in efficiency is worth the extra build complexity?

I rolled on 3 coats; sanding between each. Then used a hopper gun to spray on another 2.

As for the grills, I ordered a full sheet from McNichols ( http://www.mcnichols.com/viewer.htm ) had them cut the sheet to rough size pieces for me. had a local guy sheer and break the grills to final size.

I have never A/B these with a BR with a similar driver. I have listened to several jbl cabinets, one being a dual 15 and the other a dual 18. don't know the model number on the dual 15. the dual 18 is a SR4719x. The cyclops seem to have the advantage over the dual 15. even the owner of the dual 15 thinks the same. I'd say the SR4719x is equivalent to the cyclops. never comparing side by side this is only my opinion. i built these to replace some old peavey sp118 subs. 2 cyclops murder 4 sp118s, but big difference in drivers. one thing i will say, this sub seems to be somewhat directional. i know bass is omni directional, but these cabinets really project the frequencies. i lose almost nothing behind them.

That ( unfortunately ) is a common misconception.
Bass directivity can be implemented; but bass wavelengths are large compared to the size of radiators and bass cabinets and baffles commonly used.

Thanks Sydney. I have very limited experience; no expert by any means. I've only learned by interpreting what I read, which isn't always correct.

A couple of links for you Scott:

This article is an attempt to quantify the theory and application of low frequency arrays for sound reinforcement applications.

We have a McNichols here in the Seattle/Tacoma area. I found their prices to be prohibitive as compared to an uncut sheet of perforated from Penn/Elcom. Perhaps they're a little cheaper where you are?

Honestly I never checked with Penn-Elcom. I build a lot of road cases and purchase my hardware from them. Can't believe I never checked. McNichols is just over 2 hours from my work place. I think I had $300 in the grills. That was a single sheet cut into 6 pieces and shipped.
