The cab (from post #5) is a 2-way using your 15" and the Alpha 6 for the top end.

None of the mass-produced bass cabs I've seen has been a 3-way, although that statement
could be interpreted more than one way... ;-)

Yes it can be interpreted more ways than one but if you read a lot of users opinions they tend to say 15s aren't "fast" enough or too boomy. This is probably due to the lack of midrange from having a hole in the midrange between the woofer and tweeter response. Some people may like that sound but it is a lot harder to get that midrange back than it is to cut it if it is already there.

Re: Driver(s) for 6-string bass cab?

If we were talking about 15" consumer woofers I'd agree without checking any further - especially if it were a subwoofer driver - which came up in conversation here.

Lots of different sub-topics flying around, but in the specific case of the single-15 ported cabs I have, there isn't room for a midrange driver, but I might try that Eminence tweeter just to have done it -assuming I can find time to profile the woofer/cab and fiddle an appropriate crossover...

        Thanks,

It's much more likely the result of a box that's too small, causing a loss of lows and a hump in the midbass. That's one of the most common deficiencies of commercial bass cabs. The hole caused by crossing over way too high to a tweeter from a large woofer won't cause boomy response. And when the word 'fast' is used with respect to bass you know right off the bat that the person using the term has little to no understanding of loudspeakers. That's unfortunately one of the most common deficiencies in the knowledge base of the average bass player, who when asked how a speaker works is likely as not to reply "You plug it in".

....or, the knowledge base of the typical salesman, who tends to promote such merchandise.

Got a close friend who is looking for help with his bass guitar rig. I stumbled across this thread and recognized Bill Fitzmaurice name from years back when I was banging around here with 12 driver dodecahedron subwoofers. After talking with him and going to a gig he played and observing his bandmates and general sound, I agreed to help him. Been pondering his situation for a few weeks and after reading this thread I'm relieved that what I've been thinking is mostly in line with what's being laid out here, both what to do and what not to do and why. His band mates all have the opinion that bass players blow out their sound and since he's the one that started the band, owns most of the gear, and books all the gigs, he's having issues. Mind you, they have never had HIM blow out their sound, the problem is that they've never had a sound guy, the drummer has been trying to handle that. The one gig I attended they sounded very unbalanced.

Pray tell how does a drummer run sound? Does he set up his kit in the FOH?

That's what I said. Dude had a Behringer somethingsomething that was controlled over wifi with an ipad. We don't care any more because he and Lenny didn't work things out and he left the band. That was brewing for a long time, the next gig is New Year's Eve and he's already rehearsing with the replacement drummer.

He's falling back to his analog powered board. We just need to rewire his PA to take advantage of his two Crown two channel amps that have some serious built in digital processing. From what I could tell, he was just running all the drivers full range. Which was part of the problem. Like I said, he's got decent enough equipment, he just has no idea how to use it.
