  • Crown XLS 1500 noob question

Looking to purchase a Crown XLS 1500 power amplifier
to power the center channel speaker in a home theater
system. No, I'll probably never use more than 1/4-1/3
of it's full power output. It's just a really good value and
reported to sound quite good also.

    - Don't need to run it in bridged mode, as that is to
    much power.
-Prefer the XLS 1500 vs the XLS 1000 because I may
later use it to power two two surround-back channels
and it more closely matches the output of the 4 channel
amp running the L, R, SL, SR speakers.

Can I simply use one channel of the Crown XLS 1500
with the amp in 'Stereo Bypass Mode' (PureBand
Crossover System Bypassed) without it being detrimental
    to the amp?

    Thanks

I don't know if you need to use stereo bypass but I am sure you can just use the left or right channel and leave it in stereo. It won't hurt it to not have anything on the other channel.

The 1500 is a better choice than the 1000 due to a better signal noise ratio also btw.

You can use just one channel.

If your center is bi-ampable, you can do that as well.

You mentioned the XLS1000; my advice is to stick with the XLS1500 due to the lower SNR of the 1000.

I had a couple of Crown amps, the 3000 and a 900. good mobile or auditorium, work horse. Not good for home high fidelity. Try the Crown then try a class A/B. You should hear the difference. Crows need to be enclosed due to the cooling fan, noise. Sold mine to a DJ.

          Proof is in the listening.

Not all crowns are the same. The xls make no fan noise. I don't even think the fan runs under normal use. Also the xls are a totally different topology than the ones you mention so you really can't compare. Besides that, comparing by brand is silly.

agreed. I've never heard my XLS amps kick on, and that was even with serious full power testing of a subwoofer on the klippel.

I have seen the fan move, but I can't hear it.
