  • Tarkus Build

I started these in late August of last year and happily completed them beginning of April.
I will post the finished pics for now, nothing too groundbreaking in the build, but I have some pics of the journey if anyone has questions.

My Overnight Sensation MTMs are the closest experience I've had with quality speakers, so I can say that the Tarkus are another step beyond them to my ears. The midrange is better - voices are smoother, snares have better snap, and just more resolving of details. And obviously can hit the low B on a 5 string much stronger. Bass is good on these, although I did find myself wanting to add a bit more. But that's just me.

I did do a measurement of these with a UMIK-1. Of note, these are the originally designed crossover but with the newer DX25-TG59 tweeter. As you can see, my measurements do not show the tweeter being overly hot. You can see room issues present. These were targeted at 80db for the sweep, 30 inches away, 1/6th octave smoothing, and gate time of around 50ms I believe with a Hamming window on REW.

Sadly, these are in transit enroute to my uncle who asked me to build them for him. He is an old prog-rock Zeppelin fan with a collection of over 1200 vinyls, so he is looking forward to getting these into his new music/listening studio space.

Again any questions, feel free to ask! Thanks to all around here who help others and give much of their time to help the new guys like me here.

Nice job! Nice listening space, too!!
Isn't it about time we started answering rhetorical questions?

This doesn't make much sense to me if you measured indoors especially. A room reflection is present through the entire measurement leading to very little useful data. Can you try again with a gate around 5ms and smoothing 1/48th octave.
I'm not deaf, I'm just not listening!

              Nice speakers!!
I was just looking at those a couple days ago for use with the SDS mid.
What's the overall sensitivity 85 db in room?
              Rms power handling?

Dcibel, I still have all the sweeps in REW.
Attached 5ms gating with 1/48th smoothing, the first with the default Tukey 0.25 windowing, and the second with the Hann windowing.

Let me know if there are any other things I should do to provide better information. Unfortunately I can't do the measurements again because I don't have the Tarkus' (Tarki?) with me. I could run new measurements with my OS MTMs if new sweeps are needed.

                Thanks.

Sigil, I don't know the sensitivity as I don't measure the power output at 1W/1m or 2.83V/1m. I just turned up my AVR until pink noise was registering at around 80db.

Also, thanks all for the compliments!
