Fun With PVC Pipe

Paul Carmody in describing his Tubifex says " that this project is far more than your average "let's slap a driver in a weird plastic thing and see what happens.""

My projects can best be described as slap a driver in some pvc pipe and see what happens. But Paul knows what he is doing while I do not.

The black speaker is an MTM with HiVi M3N and the Dayton ND20FA-6.

The blue speaker is a TM with a Dayton TCP115-4 and Vifa BC25SC55-4.

I am pleased with sound of both, but have not spent as much time listening to them as I would like.

I have a set of Linkwitz LXminis, which are mostly PVC pipes and a rubber sewer coupling.

Dukk, I actually fired them up last night after posting here. They have a very nice spatial effect. Not at all gimmicky or contrived. They do need a sub. Not hard to build, the small speaker PVC pipe is a bit fussy to drill and mount the speaker. A miter saw is the way to cut the PVC.

Dukk, I actually fired them up last night after posting here. They have a very nice spatial effect. Not at all gimmicky or contrived. They do need a sub. Not hard to build, the small speaker PVC pipe is a bit fussy to drill and mount the speaker. A miter saw is the way to cut the PVC.

Forum member William Schneider made a pair of Linkwitz Plutos. They are an earlier more complicated and expensive design that is basically similar to the LXminis. Mr Schneider is a real craftsman and photographer. His Pluto pictures look like ad copy. The Plutos were intriguing but the price was more than my interest in hearing them could justify.

Sadly, after Mr. Linkwitz died, I became aware of his LXminis. They use a Mini DSP instead of the custom electronics of the Plutos. The size fitted in with my downsizing. The price was in my comfort range.

Be aware you need four channels of good amplification, six if you go with Mr. Linkwitz's stereo subs. I use a Dayton 8" DSP sub, works for me.

The Madison, WI based speaker source has a very complete kit.
