  • Kraken vs dual UM 18's.

Sometime last year, I undertook the task of building a single Kraken in the blow through in my 2011 GMC Sierra. I settled with a hair over 6 ft tuned to 29 hz. It was running off a Taramps Smart 3000, that is supposed to have 2000 watts at 4 ohms and 3000 at 2 and 1 ohm. Right off the bat, I was very impressed with the Kraken, not just for the output but also for the sound quality. Kicks drums have instant impact with no overhang at all. If it wasn't so loud, I would swearit was a single 10 inch sub. As things with most audio nuts, as soon as the new wore off, I started planning a build with dual UM 18's. So I started this new build a couple months back. I went with 6 cubes each with right at 100 squares of vert area. 2 months back there was a local audio show, so I took the Kraken to demo since the dual 18 box was not done yet. People were impressed, and for sure I was the only person there with Dayton Audio equipment. Just about everyone had heard of Parts-Express, but none had considered it. Most everybody had Sundown equipment and had higher tuned SPL box tuning. That means that for demos, people were really impressed, but for the SPL meter,it suffered. I hit just under 140 at 139.7 and the box had crazy resistance in real time,as the guy had it clamped for power output. I only got 500 watts at a lot of frequencies and my peak was at 35-36 hz. So me being the impulsive ADD guy I am, decided to go home and throw the new box quickly in 95 degree heat and then drive back to the show, as it was only ab, and got out 10 miles from my house. However, I almost had a heat stroke, and the only think that stopped it was me jumping in the pool.

Fast forward to a few days ago, when I got everything done properly and put the 18's in. It was night and day difference in total output and low bass. My amp was clipping at 4 ohms at a volume level of 26-28 on my head unit. Now I was going to 30-32 with no clipping at all. I'd say output has went up my more than 10 decibels. My neighbor said it sounded like I was coming through the wall at 500 yards away. I want to find a show or certified SPL meter to see the proof for sure. All in all, both subs were fun and people were impressed and I may have just turned a few people onto Dayton Audio.

You likely gained 6dB on paper, maybe in reality.
