Tarkus in 2023

Paul Carmody's Tarkus in 2023! alive and well, with a revision of the original design but staying accurate to the volume requirements and the driver distances. The TM cab face is slightly different from the original, but, works well.
I was looking for a low-cost 3-way build, and from Paul's description, these fit the bill perfectly. It was a blast building these. Here's the build log.

Dimensions:

Bracing:

The outer shell is made with 19mm plywood, and the bracing from 12mm. See the bass enclosure partition on the top, it is at 31.75".
The horizontal bracing just below the bass cab division can be eliminated.
The bracing volume is approx. 9.5L

Foam Lining:

Egg-crate foam of 38mm lined on all walls, except the front. The TM cab can be filled with polyfill later if need be.

Hey everyone! So glad many others have jumped on the Tarkus project. I absolutely LOVE my Tarkus BUT I feel as if there’s a hole in the sound somewhere between 200-500 hz. There’s a steep drop in midmass. Low bass rolls in pretty abruptly. I have played the speaker without the bottom woofer section. The mid and twitter sounds very high with almost zero bass as if it’s lower limits are capped around 300-400hz. Wish I could bring the mid down and/or bring up the woofer. Not sure how to accomplish it.

Excellent finish on your Tarkus!

1. I'm unable to discern your crossover because it's all bunched up. Compare the original schematic and retrace the connections on your crossover.
2. Where's your 6.0 mH inductor?
3. Do you have any measuring equipment like UMIK and REW? if so you can check if it's the speaker or the room that has a suckout.
4. Walk around the room and see if there's any improvement in bass, if there is, then it's a speaker/listening position issue.

Hi aeroash... first off, great job on your Tarkus. I have a hard time thinking it's my room since I have 6 pairs of varying speakers that I rotate and none have this issue. I think DeZZar is probably correct that the polarities maybe messed up so I'm going to re-evaluate the connections and wiring and x-over build.

I'm going to guess that the woofer network is in the woofer box separately.

I would definitely be checking that this crossover little nest thing going on here is exactly as intended. It goes without saying that a single incorrect connection will have materially adverse effects on the result.

Check that polarity is correctly wired between woofer and midrange. Wiring the drivers opposite to what was intended could be causing a large suck out around the lower crossover point. According to Paul's website the tweeter and midrange should be wired in inverse polarity whilst the bass driver is wired normally.

DeZZar you are correct. The woofer x-over is in the woofer box. I'm going to pull out the x-over and take photos to share. I will check the polarity. I'm crossing my fingers that it's something I did wrong in which case, my fault, learn, and fix it.
